The authors present an updated search for direct CP violation in the decay B[sup 0] --> K[sup +]pi[sup -]. Using 227 million [Upsilon](4S) --> B[bar B] decays collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy E[sup +]e[sup -] collider at SLAC, the authors observe a total signal yield of n(K-pi[sup +]) + n(K[sup +]pi[sup -]) = 1606 [+-] 51 decays and measure the asymmetry [n(K[sup -]pi[sup +])-n(K[sup +]pi[sup -])]/[n(K[sup -]pi[sup +])+n(K[sup +]pi[sup -])] = 0.133 [+-] 0.030(stat) [+-] 0.009(syst). This measurement establishes direct CP violation in the B[sup 0] meson system at the level of 4.2 standard deviations.

The search for rare B decays and direct CF violation at BABAR is described. The following measurements (based on integrated luminosities ranging from 56.4 to 81.9 fb[sup -1]) are summarized: the inclusive branching fractions and direct CF asymmetries of B[sup+][yields] h[sup+]h[sup -]H[sup+] (h=[pi], K), the exclusive branching fractions of B[sup+][yields] K[sup+][pi][sup -][pi][sup+] (where significant signals are observed in the B[sup+][yields] K*[sup 0](892)[pi][sup+], B[sup+][yields] f[sub 0](98)K[sup+], B[sup+][yields][chi][sub c0]K[sup+], B[sup+][yields][bar D][sup 0][pi][sup+] and B[sup+][yields] higher K*[sup 0][pi][sup+] channels), the branching fractions of B[sup+][yields][rho][sup 0][rho][sup+] and B[sup+][yields][rho][sup 0] K*[sup+], and finally, the branching fractions, the longitudinal components, and the direct CF asymmetries in B[yields][phi]K*.

The authors present preliminary measurements of the branching fraction and the CP-violating charge asymmetry in the B[sup +] --> K[sup 0][pi][sup +] decay, and a preliminary measurement of the branching fraction of the B[sup 0] --> K[sup 0][bar K][sup 0] decay. No evidence of direct CP violation in the B[sup +] --> K[sup 0][pi][sup +] mode is observed. The B[sup 0] --> K[sup 0][bar K][sup 0] measurement constitutes the first observation of this decay channel: the probability of obtaining the result assuming the null-signal hypothesis is 3.4 x 10[sup -6]. The authors have also searched for the B[sup +] --> [bar K][sup 0]K[sup +] decay and set an upper limit on its branching fraction at 2.35 x 10[sup -6] at the 90% C.L. The branching-fraction measurements reported here are consistent with previous measurements of the same quantities, but are extracted from a data sample larger by a factor of 2.6.

We have searched for direct CP violation in quasi-two-body charmless B decays observed in a sample of about 45 million B mesons collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider. We measure the following charge asymmetries in decay: [Alpha][sub CP](B[sup [+-]] [yields] [eta][prime]K[sup [+-]]) = -0.11 [+-] 0.02, [Alpha][sub CP](B[sup [+-]] [yields] [omega][pi][sup [+-]]) = 0.01[sub -0.31][sup +0.29] [+-] 0.03, [Alpha][sub CP](B[sup [+-]] [yields] [phi]K[sup [+-]]) = -0.05 [+-] 0.20 [+-] 0.03, [Alpha][sub CP](B[sup [+-]] [yields] [phi]K*[sup [+-]]) = -0.43[sub -0.30][sup +0.36] [+-] 0.06, and [Alpha][sub CP](B[sup 0]/[bar B][sup 0] [yields] [phi]K*[sup 0]/[bar K]*[sup 0]) = 0.00 [+-] 0.27 [+-] 0.03.

The authors report observations of CP violation in the decays B° → K?− and B° →?+?− in a sample of 383 million?(4S) → B{bar B} events. They find 4372 ± 82 B° → K+?− decays and measure the direct Cp-violating charge asymmetry?{sub K?} = -0.107 ± 0.018(stat){sub -0.004}{sup +0.007}(syst), which excludes the CP-conserving hypothesis with a significance of 5.5 standard deviations. In the same sample they find 1139 ± 49 B° →?+?− decays and measure the CP-violating asymmetries S{sub??} = -0.60 ± 0.11(stat) ± 0.03(syst) and C{sub??} = -0.21 ± 0.09(stat) ± 0.02(syst). CP conservation in B° →?+{pi}− (S{sub {pi}{pi}} = C{sub {pi}{pi}} = 0) is excluded at a confidence level 1-C.L. = 8 x 10−8, corresponding to 5.4 standard deviations.

CP violation is observed to date only in K[sup 0] decays and is parameterizable by a single quantity[epsilon]. Because it is one of the least understood phenomena in the Standard Model and holds a clue to baryogenesis, it must be investigated further. Highly specialized searches in K[sup 0] decays are possible. Effects in B decays are much larger. In addition to the traditional B[sub d][yields] J/[psi]K[sub S], [pi][sup+][pi][sup[minus]] asymmetries, CP violation could be searched for in already existing inclusive B data samples. The rapid B[sub s]--[anti B][sub s] oscillations cancel in untagged B[sub s] data samples, which therefore allow feasibility studies for the observation of CP violation and the extraction of CKM elements with present vertex detectors. The favored method for the extraction of the CKM angle[gamma] is shown to be unfeasible and a solution is presented involving striking direct CP violation in charged B decays. Novel methods for determining the B[sub s] mixing parameter[Delta]m are described without the traditional requirement of flavor-specific final states.

The direct CP violating parameter A[sub K*[pi]] was measured for the decay B[sup 0] --> K*[sup +][pi][sup -] and is in agreement with the CLEO measurement, with no evidence of CP violation with the statistics used. Using larger datasets, one can extract amplitudes and relative phases of the resonant contributions to the Dalitz plot, with the possibility to observe new B-meson decays.
