First edition of the author's original investigation of coronary circulation. "Burns described endocarditis and report three cases of mitral stenosis. He recognized the trill present in the latter condition and seems to have understood the mechanism of a cardiac murmur. He also described unilateral paralysis of the diaphragm resulting from pressure on the phrenic nerve by a thoracic aneurysm. Burns (1781-1813) "was an original investigator and man who fearlessly rejection traditional authority" (Fishman & Richards, Circulation of the Blood , p. 222-23). In Lecturing on this subject, I noticed, that although many detached Works have been published on particular affections of the Heart, still no treatise has yet appeared, presenting a connected view of the causes and consequences, of the various Diseases to which this most important organ is liable. These considerations, in the first instance, led me to pay some attention to this subject; and the same considerations, have now induced me to make the result of my inquiries public.
