This study of Song of Songs uncovers many patterns related to the numerical value twenty-six and related numbers for the divine name YHWH. Patterns are so unique that they clearly show authorial intent. They involve the numerical value of root forms of words, their sequences, and their totals in the book. The beloved man is highlighted by special patterns, which indicate that a typology for God is intended. Deer names in the refrain have number patterns that confirm intention for being circumlocutions for divine names. The disputed presence of the divine name YH in 8:6 is confirmed by the value of its full word. One of the most striking patterns found with the help of a computer is that the totals of root words are all arranged to point to theological numbers in a beautiful intricacy. Besides describing these patterns, this study discusses numerical competence within a proposed Hebrew literary circle, and what steps they might have gone through to create these amazing phenomena. These theological numbers confirm intentionality for allusions to the Hebrew Bible and support a hermeneutic of spiritual applications. A literary analysis of each poem focuses on the use of numbers among other features of prominence.

In this study of Hosea Loren Bliese documents his current research into how the poetics of the Hebrew Bible were enhanced by arranging the counts of words and structures in order to beautify the message. The two words "good" and "covenant" are the only words that come once each in the five parts of the book. They point to a structural theme of the book, that God's covenant is good in contrast to idolatrous relationships that lead to disaster. Hosea's symbolic numbers are derived from both twenty-two of the Hebrew letters, and from twenty-six, the value of the divine name YHWH along with other numbers related to the name. Plays on the word "repent" or "return" have a build-up of repetitions to the end where the plea "Return, Israel, to the LORD your God" is prominent. Each of these words is marked by numeric significance. The book is a discourse analysis of Hosea's whole text, focusing on features of prominence, including symbolic numbers. The study analyzes thirty of the forty-five poems in Hosea with the form of metrical chiasmus pointing to a central peak. Bliese has developed this in previous writings. Abundant chi-square probability calculations support his analysis.

This large-scale work is the application of modern theories of discourse analysis to questions of Greek grammar, especially with respect to the debate over the literary integrity of Philippians. Chapter 1 introduces the linguistic theory of discourse analysis, defining key terms, sketching its historical evolution and outlining its major tenets. Chapter 2 sets forth a model of discourse analysis primarily based on the systemic functional theories of M.A.K. Halliday. Chapter 3 outlines the historical-critical debate over the literary integrity of Philippians. Chapter 4 inspects the genre of Philippians, challenging rhetorical approaches to the text and proposing instead an epistolary classification, viz. 'personal, hortatory letter'. While providing exciting research opportunities, the New Testament's use of the Old Testament continues to create interpretive difficulties. Although Matthew's use of the Old Testament generated much scholarly discussion throughout the historical-critical period, during the contemporary period specific interest in Matthew's Old Testament usage seemed to decrease. Recently, however, many powerful analytical approaches have come to the fore in biblical studies, including various text-centered methods such as textlinguistics (also known as discourse analysis). This book applies one specific type of discourse grammar to several Old Testament citations in Matthew's Gospel. This analysis is presented both to initiate discussion and to show how this and similar methods might be utilized to contribute important perspectives on the New Testament's use of the Old Testament.
