A crucial problem facing governments is the increasing environmental pollution from modern technology and the potential concomitant health risks. The average annual world production of chemicals is about 400 million tonnes, representing five to seven million known chemicals, 5 to 10 per cent of which are considered hazardous, while 150 to 200 are thought to have carcinogenic properties.

Setting The Limit written by Sven Ove Hansson and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Medical categories.

Occupational exposure limits exemplify the practical application of moral values in medical science. But are they really effective in protecting workers from chemical hazards? In order to answer this question on the basis of sound empirical evidence, this book presents an unusually detailed and comprehensive analysis of three lists of exposure limits from the United States, Germany and Sweden. Hansson analyzes the nature of toxicological knowledge and discusses how the standards of proof required in a regulatory context differ from those appropriate in pure science. In his view, decision-makers must deal not only with the known risks but also with the uncertainties that arise as a consequence of the incompleteness of toxicological information. With this in mind, he proposes new ways to organize exposure limits and to evaluate toxicological data for regulatory purposes. Setting the Limit is a thorough, detailed study of the application of ethical principles in an important area of public health practice. It is intended for occupational health professionals and risk analysts, as well as philosophers and sociologists of science.

Safety And Health In The Iron And Steel Industry written by International Labour Office and has been published by International Labour Organization this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Business & Economics categories.

The practical recommendations in this publication reflect the changes that have taken place in the iron and steel industry over the last 20 years or so, and changes to the ILO's approach to developing codes of practice. A leaner, flexible, more highly skilled workforce, new technology and a less prescriptive, more systems-oriented approach to addressing safety and health are reflected in the revised Code. It is intended to provide guidance to ILO constituents and all those responsible for addressing safety and health throughout the iron and steel industry. The general provisions of the Code cover: general responsibilities, duties and rights; the legal framework; safety and health management; reporting, recording and notification of work-related injuries and diseases, ill health and incidents and health services. Guidance on industry-specific prevention and protection includes: furnaces and ovens, foundries; handling molten material; rolling mills and coating lines; and recycling. There are also sections on: competence and training; personal protection; emergency preparedness; and welfare. Annexes to the Code include: workers' health surveillance; surveillance of the working environment; occupational exposure limits; and chemicals used in the iron and steel industry. This code replaces an earlier code that was adopted in 1981.
