"Background. Substance use disorders are a growing epidemic and disrupt occupational engagement and performance. Purpose. This study examined the assessment and intervention strategies used by practicing occupational therapists working with clients with a potential or diagnosed SUD, as well as their perceived role in treating these clients. Method. QUantitative and qualitative data was collected via a researcher-created survey mailed to 261 randomly-selected American Occupational Therapy Association members. Quantitative results were interpreted using frequency counts to identify common trends, and qualitative data was coded to identify common themes among participants. Results. Participants reported they can be an effective agent of change with this population. However, they do not routinely assess for SUDs, consider SUD treatment a priority, or believe they have the knowledge and confidence to treat this population. Participants identified non-standardized techniques, including interviews and occupation-based treatment, as the most common assessment and treatment methods. Discussion. The results of this survey were consistent with those of a similar survey by Thompson (2007). This suggests that occupational therapy practice is not evolving to meet the needs of the growing SUD problem. Many participants cited a need for more education on SUDs to improve their confidence and knowledge, which could potentially impact their assessment and treatment practices with this population. Conclusion. Occupational therapists are not routinely assessing or treating clients for SUDs, even though they are encountering SUDs in their practice. Further research is warranted to determine the efficacy of occupational therapy treatment for clients with SUDs.
