The theme of the seas has long been a central topic in scholarship on the Lusophone world, but more recent research has invested ocean crossings with new relevance and urgency. This special issue brings together a diversity of approaches, paying close attention to sea mobilities, what they entailed, and how they were practiced, and what meanings have been associated with them. Scholars also consider the performance or practice of movement in itself, from the efforts of ocean crossing to the subtleties of moving and the complexities of (maritime) kinetic life and the fabrication of migrant lives.

Paints a compelling picture of impressive pre-Columbian cultures and Old World civilizations that, contrary to many prevailing notions, were not isolated from one another In Ancient Ocean Crossings: Reconsidering the Case for Contacts with the Pre-Columbian Americas, Stephen Jett encourages readers to reevaluate the common belief that there was no significant interchange between the chiefdoms and civilizations of Eurasia and Africa and peoples who occupied the alleged terra incognita beyond the great oceans. More than a hundred centuries separate the time that Ice Age hunters are conventionally thought to have crossed a land bridge from Asia into North America and the arrival of Columbus in the Bahamas in 1492. Traditional belief has long held that earth’s two hemispheres were essentially cut off from one another as a result of the post-Pleistocene meltwater-fed rising oceans that covered that bridge. The oceans, along with arctic climates and daunting terrestrial distances, formed impermeable barriers to interhemispheric communication. This viewpoint implies that the cultures of the Old World and those of the Americas developed independently. Drawing on abundant and concrete evidence to support his theory for significant pre-Columbian contacts, Jett suggests that many ancient peoples had both the seafaring capabilities and the motives to cross the oceans and, in fact, did so repeatedly and with great impact. His deep and broad work synthesizes information and ideas from archaeology, geography, linguistics, climatology, oceanography, ethnobotany, genetics, medicine, and the history of navigation and seafaring, making an innovative and persuasive multidisciplinary case for a new understanding of human societies and their diffuse but interconnected development.

'This cruising guide for ocean voyagers provides invaluable passage-planning information for tried and tested routes around the world. Climates and weather patterns, currents, seasons and timings are key to selecting routes, but just as important is knowing something about the countries that you will arrive in. Details of the expected formalities and regulations are followed by essential information on key landfalls, accompanied by the first-hand observations of well-known world sailors and authors Rod Heikell and Andy O’Grady. Text and plans have been updated for this third edition which is illustrated with a number of new photographs to inspire both dreamers and passagemakers. “I have recently been planning a voyage from Trinidad to New Zealand using Ocean Passages and Landfalls by Rod Heikell and Andy O'Grady. The book has been an exceptional resource. The mass of information on a wealth of subjects is excellent. The layout is beautifully put together and very accessible. The pilotage and chartlets will be invaluable. The book will certainly be travelling with me and I cannot recommend it highly enough to anybody who is planning ocean voyaging.” Theresa Kewell, S/Y Mr Blue ‘This is a ‘blue planet’ book. Its scope is awe-inspiring as it takes an overview of the globe as the yachtsman’s potential cruising ground… It is of course possible to glean all the macro information from scientific geophysical sources, but the personality and experience of the authors adds an indispensable ingredient.’ Yachting Monthly

'Ocean Passages and Landfalls' is a handbook for world cruisers. It provides invaluable passage-planning information for crossing the oceans, with discussions on climates, seasons, oceanography and the merits of different world cruising routes. The heart of the book is an ocean-by-ocean round-up, and at the beginning of each of these sections is a description of routes, followed by information on the countries relevant to these routes. Details of formalities and regulations are then followed by essential information on key harbours and landfalls. This second edition has been thoroughly revised and enlarged and now features new sections on chosen areas and topics - the Atlantic Circuit or Cruising on Ice, for instance. Here the opportunity has been taken to provide more informal commentary and observations based on first-hand experience. These sections are illustrated by the author's colour photographs, many of which have been taken during the production of this new edition and sent in from far-flung parts of the oceans; Rod Heikell in the South Pacific and the Torres Strait, and Andy O'Grady in Brazil and the high latitudes of Chile. As an up-to-date reference for world cruising this new edition of 'Ocean Passages and Landfalls' sets the benchmark as both a practical reference and also as a book for dreamers.

Crossing An Ocean Under Power written by Ken Williams and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Travel categories.

Crossing an Ocean Under Power follows a retired software entrepreneur and his computer game designer wife, as they cross the Atlantic on their 62' trawler. Although sailors have been crossing oceans for hundreds of years, the era of couples cruising the world in small powerboats is just beginning. As the book begins, Mr. Williams frankly admits to serious doubts about his boating skills. Mr. Williams chronicles his journey across the Atlantic, as well as his personal journey from "coastal cruiser" to "ocean crosser." Along the way, we learn with him. Sans Souci, his boat, made the trip as part of the historic first Atlantic Power Boat rally (18 small power boats, averaging only 50 feet long, owned and captained mostly by retired couples.) Best described as a "Dummy's Guide to Crossing Oceans," Mr. Williams' honest, and entertaining, style will keep you turning pages as you take this important step in readying yourself for your own long-distance cruising.

Daredevils Of The Atlantic Ocean written by P. L. Firstbrook and has been published by Seaworthy Publications Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Adventure travel categories.

"Daredevils of the Atlantic" chronicles the exploits of a relatively new breed of adventurers and fortune-seekers who sometimes succeed and sometimes fail at crossing the Atlantic Ocean in all sorts of unlikely vessels and contraptions, including a few who even tried to swim across. Some were powered by motors, some by sails, currents, or just raw human power and athletic stamina. Many were outlandish attempts that only a madman could have conceived. These are their stories. The ocean separates two great continents, and men (and it has usually been the male species) have always sought new ways to cross 'the pond'-and not all of them in boats. This book is about these people: some wise and thoughtful, others reckless and frankly crazy; some well-prepared, others impetuous and disorganized; some skilled and proficient who understood the risks, while others were hot-headed, inexperienced and impulsive; some voyages were carefully planned, while others seemed to be cooked up on little more than a whim. In the world of trans-Atlantic sailing, as in life, it takes all sorts... What all these adventurers have in common, however, is that they launched themselves on a voyage of personal challenge and discovery, during which they put their lives on the line. For that reason alone, we should take our (sailing) hats off to them"--
