Redolent of the briny air of the sea and the lore of the seashore, Ocean Rimmed World captures the struggles and changing fortunes of the Parathavars of the Tuticorin coast—a community of seafarers and fisherfolk renowned for their courage, relentless toil, and tempestuous nature. Interspersed with this is the story of three fishermen lost at sea with only a log as their means of survival. A gripping novel of breathtaking scale and intricate detail, it is at once a celebration of the myriad faces of the sea and an eloquent tribute to the human spirit that is repeatedly battered but never vanquished. A certain melancholy overlies the innate wisdom and grit of the fisherfolk as they contend with the various changes that threaten to wash over them. The mixed dialects of the Parathavars, the myths they live by, and their deep, abiding love for the sea—their mother—makes this novel a truly memorable read.

Cultivating Integral Development written by Ananta Kumar Giri and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-18 with Social Science categories.

This book cultivates visions and practices of integral development of the self, society, and the world. It builds upon deconstructions of development discourse and practice and strives to reconstruct and reconstitutes it as integral development. It addresses entrenched dualisms in development studies and practices such as between the self and the other, the providers of development and its recipients, materialism, and spirituality, and cultivates pathways of integral development. The book explores the many challenges facing development studies and practice such as poverty, creativity, political economy, moral economy, leadership, sustainable development, and evolutionary flourishing. It also opens the discourse and practice of development to cross-cultural dialogues by undertaking discussions between Euro-centric approaches to development and other visions and practices of development such as Purusartha, Swadhyaya, Sarvodaya, integral yoga, and Lokasasamgraha from Indic traditions. Drawing on multiple cultural and philosophical resources and traditions, Cultivating Integral Development is a pioneering work and will be of great interest to scholars, researchers, and actors of development studies, political science, and philosophy as well as concerned human beings around the world.

After The Ice written by Alun Anderson and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11-24 with Science categories.

We all now know that the arctic is the canary in the coal mine of climate change, but that is only part of the story. As Alun Anderson reveals in this fascinating book, the melting snow and ice are now giving way to a much bigger story of battles over vast deposits of gas, oil and minerals, arguments over control of new sea lanes and disputes over access to huge new, untapped fisheries in rich, warming seas. The arctic has become a new frontier, where the future wealth and power of northern nations - including Britain - is being fought out today. From the titanium Russian flag that now sits on the sea bed beneath the North Pole to disagreements over where Greenland starts and ends, this is a topic that is only going to become more important. This compelling book reveals the full story of what is happening today in this most important of regions and what needs to be done to preserve it for all humanity - but also shows how the arctic will have its own revenge if we're unable to find a solution now.

Transoceanic America written by Michelle Burnham and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-23 with Literary Criticism categories.

Transoceanic America offers a new approach to American literature by emphasizing the material and conceptual interconnectedness of the Atlantic and Pacific worlds. These oceans were tied together economically, textually, and politically, through such genres as maritime travel writing, mathematical and navigational schoolbooks, and the relatively new genre of the novel. Especially during the age of revolutions in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, long-distance transoceanic travel required calculating and managing risk in the interest of profit. The result was the emergence of a newly suspenseful form of narrative that came to characterize capitalist investment, political revolution, and novelistic plot. The calculus of risk that drove this expectationist narrative also concealed violence against vulnerable bodies on ships and shorelines around the world. A transoceanic American literary and cultural history requires new non-linear narratives to tell the story of this global context and to recognize its often forgotten textual archive.
