The Age of Dissent argues that the defining feature of the Age of Revolutions in Latin America was the emergence of dissent as an inescapable component of political life. While contestation and seditious ideas had always been present in the region, never before had local regimes been forced to consider radical dissension as an unavoidable dimension of politics. Focusing on urban Chile between the first anticolonial conspiracy of 1780 and the consolidation of an authoritarian regime in 1833, the book argues that this revolution was caused by how people practiced communication and framed its power.

Este libro las dinámicas del conflicto social y político en el siglo XIX chileno, colocando el acento en las manifestaciones de protesta desplegadas por los sectores populares del país. En esta centuria, una de las más estudiadas por la historiografía nacional, se gestaron profundos cambios. Cambios en la estructura económica, asociados a la consolidación del modo capitalista de producción en el sector minero, a una incipiente pero sostenida modernización del sector agrario y a la temprana irrupción del sector industrial. Cambios en las relaciones laborales, que condujeron a una expansión sistemática del proletariado y de la salarización. Importantes readecuaciones en el sistema político y en las dinámicas de la lucha política, que devinieron en la emergencia de movimientos sociales que cuestionaban las bases de sustentación del régimen de dominación. Y cambios en las representaciones socio-culturales, resignificación de las identidades colectivas y desarrollo de nuevos sentidos de pertenencia: Clase, partido, patria. La estrategia de modernización económica se apoyó en mecanismos de compulsión laboral orientados a fijar a los trabajadores en determinadas actividades productivas. Junto con ello se desplegaron una serie de iniciativas tendientes a disciplinar las conductas transgresoras de la población y, por otro lado, se elaboraban discursos moralizantes que pretendían intervenir sobre las prácticas culturales y sobre las formas de sociabilización del pueblo. Pero las clases populares resistieron esta triple matriz de intervención. Continuaron practicando la huida como forma de evadir la proletarización forzosa, reincidían en sus prácticas transgresoras y libertinas al interior de sus ámbitos de sociabilización y si bien no rechazaban explícitamente el discurso moralizador, en la práctica tampoco lo acataban. Pero, además, y en no pocas ocasiones, los sectores populares reaccionaron violentamente contra las compulsiones de la élite. El motín urbano, el levantamiento minero y el bandolerismo rural, se convirtieron en manifestaciones recurrentes de la rebeldía popular frente a las presiones del sistema de dominación. En ellas los sectores populares enfrentaban a los dispositivos de encuadramiento y represión del Estado y violentaban los bienes de la oligarquía. Abstract This book examines the dynamics of social and political conflict in the Chilean 19th century, focusing on the manifestations of protest deployed by the popular sectors of the country. In this century, one of the most studied by national historiography, profound changes took place. Changes in the economic structure, associated with the consolidation of the capitalist mode of production in the mining sector, an incipient but sustained modernization of the agrarian sector and the early irruption of the industrial sector. Changes in labor relations, which led to a systematic expansion of the proletariat and salarization. Important readjustments in the political system and in the dynamics of the political struggle, which resulted in the emergence of social movements that questioned the foundations of the regime of domination. And changes in socio-cultural representations, resignification of collective identities and development of new senses of belonging: class, party, homeland. The economic modernization strategy was based on labor compulsion mechanisms aimed at fixing workers in certain productive activities. Along with this, a series of initiatives were deployed to discipline the transgressive behaviors of the population and, on the other hand, moralizing discourses were developed to intervene on cultural practices and on the forms of socialization of the people. But the popular classes resisted this triple matrix of intervention. They continued to flee as a way of evading forced proletarianization, they relapsed in their transgressive and libertine practices within their socialization spheres, and although they did not explicitly reject the moralizing discourse, in practice they did not comply with it either. But, in addition, and not infrequently, the popular sectors reacted violently against the compulsions of the elite. Urban riots, mining uprisings and rural banditry became recurrent manifestations of popular rebellion against the pressures of the domination system. In them, the popular sectors confronted the devices of control and repression of the State, and violated the assets of the oligarchy.
