Excerpt from Odd Hours of a Physician The antecedents of this little volume are found in the circumstances, that the author having written a book which was not without a satisfactory share of success, it brought from his publisher a request for a second; and this so persuasively worded - as reference was had to the banker - that to have denied it would have been to admit that a person may be afflicted with the cacoethes scribendi, and at the same time be insusceptible to the solid arguments of the book-makers, - a thing, so far as the author can learn, never yet known, and not well to be made a precedent by anybody. Terms settled (it is comfortable to have all responsi bility on the back of the publisher), it remained Simply to decide as to the nature of the new book, and to secure consent to the employment upon the title-page of a name differing from that Upon the first book, as well as that on the record page of the author's family Bible not that a nom de plume designates an especial modesty, or is indicative of any particular indifference. Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. The Unity Of Nature Classic Reprint written by George Douglas Campbell and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05 with Philosophy categories.

Excerpt from The Unity of Nature It is the great advantage of these paths that they are almost infinite in number and equally various in direction. To those who walk in them nothing can ever come amiss. Every subject of interest, every object of wonder, every thought of mystery, every obscure analogy, every strange intimation of likeness in the midst of difference - the whole external and the whole internal world - is the province and the property of him who seeks to see and to understand the Unity of Nature. It is a thought which may be pursued in every calling - in the busiest hours of an active life, and in the calmest moments of rest and of reflection. But if, in the wanderings of our own spirit, and in the sins and sorrows of Human Life, there are terrible facts which resist all classification and all analysis, it will be a good result of our endeavors to comprehend the Unity of Nature, should it lead us better to see, and more definitely to understand, those features in the character of Man which constitute The Great Exception. Excerpt from Exploring Nature With Your Child: An Introduction to the Enjoyment and Understanding of Nature Just as your child is a natural explorer, you are a natural guide. You help him find security and a sense of direction in the broad and bewildering world that men have made; so, too, you can guide him along nature's ways - and give him a happy outlet and satisfaction for his natural curiosity and exuberance. You can be a fellow explorer, too, enriching your own life as well as your child's. As you look back on your own early years, you may recall the first time you noticed a bud opening into a flower, a bird building its nest, two colonies of ants battling each other. You may remember that such intimate glimpses of nature gave you a real thrill. Now, as a parent, you can find still more pleasure in learning about the ways of animals and the wonders of plants as you share your observing with your child. No need to go on a safari through Central Africa - delightful discoveries await you in your own back yard, in city parks and suburban gardens, along forest trails where you may hike, and by the side of lakes and streams or the ocean where you may vacation. There is no end to the wealth of experiences nature holds in store for you and your child. In a park you can see squirrels bury ing nuts, providing for lean times in a season of plenty. You may observe a flock of wild ducks landing on a park lake for a stop over in their long flight from summer oto Winter homes. Bees, butterflies, and ants have strange and wonderful ways that you and your child can watch with fascination for hours. The diversion nature offers you is more exciting than any invented by man, yet it is close at hand and costs you nothing. In many suburbs you may look out of the window in the morning and see a woodchuck nibbling its breakfast in a dewy field, or a rabbit scampering across the lawn, purposefully headed for the vegetable garden. You may watch spiders spinning silken traps, or see an exciting tug-of-war between a robin and an earthworm. In woodlands and meadows, in zoos and museums, there is even more for you to observe. No television, radio, or motion picture producer could invest in his productions the millions of years that nature has spent in preparing these thrilling spectacles for you.
