Odours have become a priority concern for facility operators, engineers and urban planners who deal with waste and industrial treatment plants. The subjectivity of smell perception, its variability due to frequency and weather conditions, and the complex nature of the substances involved, has long hampered the regulation of odour emissions. This book provides a comprehensive framework for the assessment, measurement and monitoring of odour emissions, and covers: Odour characterization and exposure effects Instruments and methods for sampling and measurement Strategies for odour control Dispersion modelling for odour exposure assessment Odour regulations and policies Procedures for odour impact assessment Case studies: Wastewater treatment, composting, industrial and CAFO plants, and landfill Intended for researchers in environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, and civil engineering, this book is also an invaluable guide for industry professionals working in wastewater treatment, environmental and air analysis, and waste management.

The Springer Handbook of Odor is the definitive guide to all aspects related to the study of smell and their impact on human life. For the first time, this handbook aligns the senso-chemo-analytical characterization of everyday smells encountered by mankind, with the elucidation of perceptual, hedonic, behavioral and physiological responses of humans to such odors. From birth onwards we learn to interact with our environment using our sense of smell. Moreover, evolutionary processes have engendered a multi-faceted communication that is supported – even dominated – by olfaction. This compilation examines the responses of humans to odors at different stages of life, thereby building a foundation for a widely overseen area of research with broader ramifications for human life. The expert international authors and editor align aspects, concepts, methodologies and perspectives from a broad range of different disciplines related to the science of smell. These include chemistry, physiology, psychology, material sciences, technology but also disciplines related to linguistics, culture, art and design. This handbook, edited by an internationally renowned aroma scientist with the support of an outstanding team of over 60 authors, is an authoritative reference for researchers in the field of odors both in academia and in industry and is also a useful reference for newcomers to the area.

Complaints due to odour annoyance have become a major issue for wastewater treatment plant, waste management, landfill, intensive livestock and other industrial operators as the repeated release of unpleasant odorous emissions can constitute a nuisance to a local population. Traditionally, odour management has been maintained by the use of buffer distances between industry and receptors or by the installation of odour abatement systems that both collect and disperse the emission or treat the emission to acceptable level to limit receptor impact. With the expansion of suburbia and the associated encroachment, residents and industry are coming into closer proximity than in the past. This interaction is unpredictable, complex and difficult to address. Integrated odour impact management approaches involving improved measurement and understanding of odorous emissions, their impact on local receptors, treatment performance and integration in local community relations programs are needed to meet the potential impact due to population growth and increasing global urbanisation. This guide explains how EC requirements for environmental impact assessment have been incorporated into procedures in the UK. It revises the booklet Environmental Assessment: A Guide to the Procedures, published in 1989, to take account of the requirements of the Directive 97/11/EC, which was adopted on 3 March 1997 and came into force on 14 March 1999.Parts 1 and 2 of the guide explain the procedures that apply to projects that fall within the scope of the Directive and require planning permission in England and Wales. They also give general advice and guidance.

Recently the development of odour measurement, regulation and control techniques has made great progress, with new and updated standards and regulations for odour control and measurement in Europe and Australasia; in the United States, odour was listed as one of the key areas for action by the Agricultural Air Quality Task Force. In these circumstances, it is clear that a uniform systematic approach to quantifying and solving odour problems worldwide is highly desirable. This motivated the 1st IWA International Conference on Odours and VOCs, with its focus on ?measurement, regulation and control techniques?. The conference emphasised the need to standardise the approaches to odour measurement, to quantify odour impact from various emission sources for regulatory purposes, and to devise ways of alleviating odour impact on local communities. These subjects are of concern nationally and internationally because of the decreasing tolerance to such impacts by local communities and the current lack of effective solutions. From the papers presented 42 have been selected for these proceedings, dealing with olfactometry; field observation and sampling; odour regulations; physical treatment; odour dispersion modelling; volatilisation models; animal farming odours; manure treatment; biofilters; odour control for anaerobic ponds; and H2S removal. They represent the latest work of leading experts from European, Asian, North American, Australian and New Zealand universities, agencies and organisations and will prove a major resource for all interested in the research and practice of odour measurement and control.
