We are living in a world in which the visible and invisible borders between nations are being shaken at an unprecedented pace. We are experiencing a wave of international migration, and the diversity of migrants – in terms of how they identify, their external and self-image, and their participation in society – is increasingly noticeable. After the introduction of the Reform and Opening Up policy, over 10 million migrants left China, with Europe the main destination for Chinese emigration after 1978. This volume provides multidisciplinary answers to open questions: How and to what extent do Chinese immigrants participate in their host societies? 'One in four people in Germany today have a so-called migration background, however, the relationship between theatre and migration there has only recently begun to take centre stage. Indeed, fifty years after large-scale Turkish labour migration to the Federal Republic of Germany began, theatre by Turkish-German artists is only now becoming a consistent feature of Germany’s influential state-funded theatrical landscape. Drawing on extensive archival and field work, this book asks where, when, why, and how plays engaging with the new realities of “postmigrant” Germany have been performed over the past 30 years. Focusing on plays by renowned artists Emine Sevgi Özdamar, and Feridun Zaimoglu/Günter Senkel, it asks which new realities have been scripted in the theatrical sphere in the process – in the imaginations of playwrights, readers, audience members; in the enactment and direction of scripts on stage; and in the performance of new institutional approaches and cultural policies. Highlighting the role this theatre has played in a larger, ongoing re-scripting of the German stage, this study presents a critical perspective on contemporary European theatre and opens innovative developments in the conceptualization of theatre and post/migration from the German context to English language readers.

Memoirs of a Jew born in 1923 in Leipzig, who was expelled from Germany to Poland, with his parents and two brothers, in October 1938. The family settled in Tarnów, the father's native town. In November 1939, Kalter was taken for forced labor; in April 1940 he was transferred to the Dębica labor camp. In December 1940 he managed to escape, returned to Tarnów, and hid there, but several months later he was captured and sent back to the camp. His mother and elder brother were deported and killed in 1942, his father in 1943. In 1944 Kalter was sent to Auschwitz, and in November joined his younger brother in Monowitz; together they were taken in January 1945 on a death march to Gleiwitz, and a transport to Buchenwald and then Langenstein, where they were liberated. After the war Kalter emigrated to the USA; these memoirs were written during his journey there in summer 1946. Pp. 9-13, 77-81 contain an introduction by Erhard Roy Wiehn, in German and English. Pp. 67-76 present a reaction to the book by James Stuart Brice.
