This book examines the varied responses of six French authors to war, the French occupation and imprisonment. Jean Cassou was imprisoned as a member of a Resistance network and held incommunicado. During this time he composed sonnets in his head which he was able to publish later. Jean Cayrol's deportation to Mauthausen concentration camp as a result of his Resistance activities inspired his poems and novels. Madeleine Riffaud, aged only 18 in 1942, portrayed her Resistance experience, imprisonment and torture in her post-war prose and poems. A well-known literary critic and writer, Pierre-Henri Simon, composed poetry in his Stalag and wrote fiction after the war. Max Jacob, who died in Drancy, wrote poems and letters reflecting his personal views and feelings on the 'imprisonment' of the Occupation itself. Philippe Soupault was actively engaged in Resistance with the founding of Radio Tunis to combat the Italian Fascist station Radio Bari, broadcasting across the Mediterranean and North Africa. Imprisoned for these activities in 1942, he used poetry to keep a spirit of resistance alive. Each of these authors sought to maintain the spirit of the Resistance, bear witness to the times, and contribute to the future, using literature as their instrument.

From the 1811 German Coast Slave Rebellion to the 1971 Attica Prison Uprising, from the truancy of enslaved women to the extreme self-discipline exercised by prisoners in solitary confinement, Black Americans have, through time, resisted racial regimes in extraordinary and everyday ways. Though these acts of large and small-scale resistance to slavery and incarceration are radical and transformative, they have often gone unnoticed. This book is about Black rebellion in captivity and the ways that many of the conventional well-worn constructs of academic political theory render its political dimensions obscure and indiscernible. While Hannah Arendt is an unlikely theorist to figure prominently in any discussion of Black politics, her concepts of world and worldlessness offer an indispensable framework for articulating a theory of resistance to chattel and carceral captivity. Politics in Captivity begins by taking seriously the ways in which slavery and incarceration share important commonalities, including historical continuity. In Zuckerwise’s account of this commonality, the point of connection between enslaved and incarcerated people is not exploited labor, but rather resistance. The relations between the rebellions of both groups appear in the writings of Muhammed Ahmad, Angela Davis, George Jackson, Ruchell Magee, and Assata Shakur, a genre Zuckerwise calls Black carceral political thought. The insights of these thinkers and activists figure into Zuckerwise’s analyses of largescale uprisings and quotidian practices of resistance, which she conceives as acts of world-building, against conditions of forced worldlessness. In a moment when a collective racial reckoning is underway; when Critical Race Theory is a target of the Right; when prison abolition has become more prominent in mainstream political discourse, it is now more important than ever to look to historical and contemporary practices of resistance to white domination.

The captivity narrative, the earliest genre of American popular literature, continues to be of cultural significance in late 20th-century Hollywood. Many popular films of the last four decades incorporate the most common elements of the captivity narrative tradition, including a politically contested frontier setting and a plot involving innocent, family-oriented white Americans held captive by hostile, culturally alien natives. At the same time, these films offer something new to the narrative tradition: they focus on the captive who resists rescue and the challenge this resistance poses to American cultural self-confidence. By focusing on the lost captive, these films, beginning with The Searchers (1956), deal with questions about American identity raised by a white American's cultural and potentially political transformation. Films as diverse as Little Big Man, Taxi Driver, and The Deer Hunter adapted the captivity narrative's conventions to criticize aspects of contemporary American society and reject outworn models of male heroism; at the same time, however, they retained the genre's traditional assumption of white superiority and its fear of female sexuality.
