This study is about experimental forms of cultural production that situate and work through personal experiences of the civil war in Lebanon. It addresses selected works of literature, autobiography and memoir by Jean Said Makdisi, Rashid al-Daif, Elias Khoury and Mai Ghoussoub, and the civil war trilogy of documentary films by Mohamed Soueid. From a phenomenological hermeneutic perspective, the book is concerned with how they give accounts of themselves as remnants, leftovers and undigested remains of the civil war, and of related trajectories of ideological attachment to symbolic mandates. Constrained to reposition their sense of self from an agent of history to a casualty of history, their acutely personal works of cultural production initiate an unraveling of both self and circumstance through the fragmenting force of memory. Drawing on a broad range of phenomenological critical theory (within the research fields of postcolonial, memory, psychoanalytic, gender and literary studies) attuned to subjectivity as a field of social production and exchange, emphasis is given to how the writers and filmmaker employ a non-presentist, anachronic or paratactic register of memory to excavate both a historical understanding of self and related modalities of social viability. This concerns how the symptomatic style of their work embodies, and creatively and critically situates, a refusal to package and normailze any idealized account of the war, related assemblages of temporal succession, or a presentation of self as discrete and omniscient.

As Anthony D. Smith argues, to conceive of a people as a united national community requires "myths of common origins and descent." In the early modern period, such myths of English descent were threatened by perceived historical ruptures, including a monarch's uncertain succession and a king's execution. These schisms interrupted narratives of the state, and writers responded by exploring particular literary devices that, through mnemonic effects, could generate alternate political pasts. For instance, Sidney recognized that verse, because it depends upon repeated sounds or images, "far exceedeth prose in the knitting up of memory." Moving from Gorboduc (1561) to Dryden's Absalom and Achitophel (1681), my project shows how this "knitting up of memory" could prompt competing narratives that linked England's unstable histories to its imagined futures. Chapter 1 argues that Sackville and Norton's Gorboduc presents Elizabeth I's succession as a potential disaster for England, a disaster that must be contested through mnemonic devices such as dumb shows or violent images. But by provoking the audience's imagination, these devices also permit contrasting memories that resist the play's efforts to ensure political stability. Chapter 2 shows how Spenser negotiates similar memorial indeterminacy in Book II of The Faerie Queene (1590). Although his "Faery lond" lacks the physical history witnessed in the English countryside, Spenser uses ambivalent figures like Arthur to produce memories with as much political force as the narratives written by the nation's historiographers. Chapter 3 analyzes Shakespeare's Henry V (1600), which brings the king onstage in an attempt to make history into a heterogeneous audience's shared experience. Shakespeare, I find, employs rhetorical strategies similar to those of new historicists; both attempt to invigorate "dead" history through anecdotal images always subject to reinterpretation. My final two chapters compare Milton's attempts to forget the Civil War in Paradise Lost (1667) to Dryden's rhymed histories. While Milton's imagery subverts efforts to erase the trauma of revolution, Dryden's couplets mitigate regicide by treating it as the first half of an incomplete rhyme. These authors offer differing versions of Charles II's return, each responding to the memories required of a "restoration."

Up until fairly recently, memory used to be mainly considered within the frames of the nation and related mechanisms of group identity. Building on mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion, this form of memory focused on the event as a central category of meaning making. Taking its cue from a number of Anglophone novels, this book examines the indeterminate traces of memories in literary texts that are not overtly concerned with memory but still latently informed by the past. More concretely, it analyzes novels that do not directly address memories and do not focus on the event as a central meaning making category. Relegating memory to the realm of the latent, that is the not-directly-graspable dimensions of a text, the novels that this book analyses withdraw from overt memory discourses and create new ways of re-membering that refigure the temporal tripartite of past, present and future and negotiate what is ‘memorable’ in the first place. Combining the analysis of the novels’ overall structure with close readings of selected passages, this book links latency as a mode of memory with the productive agency of formal literary devices that work both on the micro and macro level, activating readers to challenge their learned ways of reading for memory.

How did the Gospel of Mark come to exist? And how was the memory of Jesus shaped by the experiences of the earliest Christians? For centuries, biblical scholars examined texts as history, literature, theology, or even as story. Curiously absent, however, has been attention to processes of collective memory in the creation of biblical texts. Drawing on modern explorations of social memory, Sandra Huebenthal presents a model for reading biblical texts as collective memories. She demonstrates that the Gospel of Mark is a text evolving from collective narrative memory based on recollections of Jesus’s life and teachings. Huebenthal investigates the principles and structures of how groups remember and how their memory is structured and presented. In the case of Mark’s Gospel, this includes examining which image of Jesus, as well as which authorial self-image, this text as memory constructs. Reading Mark’s Gospel as a Text from Collective Memory serves less as a key to unlock questions about the historical Jesus and more as an examination of memory about him within a particular community, providing a new and important framework for interpreting the earliest canonical gospel in context.

Literature explores the human condition, the mystery of the world, life and death, as well as our relations with others, and our desires and dreams. It differs from science in its aims and methods, but Babuts shows in other respects that literature has much common ground with science. Both aim for an authentic version of truth. To this end, literature employs metaphors, and it does so in a manner similar to that of scientific inquiry. The cognitive view does not imply that there is a one-to-one correlation between the world and text, that meaning belongs to the author, or that literature is equivalent to perception. What it does maintain is that meaning is crucially dependent on mnemonic initiatives and that without memory, the world remains meaningless. Nicolae Babuts claims that at the interface with the printed page, readers process texts in a manner similar to the way they explain the visible world: in segments or units of meaning or dynamic patterns. Babuts argues that humans achieve recognition by integrating stimulus sequences with corresponding patterns that recognize and interpret each segment of a text. Memory produces meaning from these patterns. In harmony with its goals, memory may adopt specific strategies to deal with different stimuli. Dynamic patterns link the unit of processing with the unit of meaning. In sum, Babuts proposes that meaning is achieved through metaphors and narrative, and that both are ways to reach cognitive goals. This original study offers perspectives that will interest cognitive psychologists, as well as those simply interested in the process through which literature stirs the human imagination.
