Since our groundbreaking 2005 study “Off-Ramps and On-Ramps: Keeping Talented Women on the Road to Success” first examined why highly qualified women in the U.S. voluntarily drop out of the workforce— and the difficulties they encounter when they try to return—we have explored the “off-ramps/on-ramps” phenomenon in Germany, Japan and, again, in the U.S. We now turn our lens to the world’s 8th largest economy: India. Nearly three-quarters of Indian women professionals step back from their careers and over one-third step out entirely. Why do they off-ramp? Are they “pulled” by family obligations or “pushed” by male-dominated workplace cultures? How long do they stay out and what challenges confront them when they on-ramp?
