Train travel is having a renaissance. Grand old routes that had been canceled, or were moldering in neglect, have been refurbished as destinations in themselves. The Rocky Mountaineer, the Orient Express, and the Trans-Siberian Railroad run again in all their glory. Pamela Mulloy has always loved train travel. Whether returning to the Maritimes every year with her daughter on the Ocean, or taking her family across Europe to Poland, trains have been a linchpin of her life. As COVID locked us down, Mulloy began an imaginary journey that recalled the trips she has taken, as well as those of others. Whether it was Mary Wollstonecraft traveling alone to Sweden in the late 1700s, or the incident that had Charles Dickens forever fearful of trains, or the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt trapped in her carriage in a midwestern blizzard in the 1890s, or Sir John A. Macdonald's wife daring to cross the Rockies tied to the cowcatcher at the front of the train, the stories explore the odd mix of adventure and contemplation that travel permits. Thoughtful, observant, and fun, Off the Tracks is the perfect blend of research and personal experience that, like a good train ride, will whisk you into another world.

Off Track And Online written by Holly Kruse and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04 with Games & Activities categories.

How horse racing's pioneering use of communication and information networks helped shape the modern media, information, and leisure environment. The horse racing industry has been a pioneer in interactive media, information networks, and their deployment. The race track and the off-track betting parlor offer interactive media environments that reconfigure the relationships among private and public space and presence and copresence. In this book, Holly Kruse explores how horse racing has used media over the last several decades, arguing that examining the history and context of horse racing and gambling gives us a clearer understanding of the development of data networks, media complexes, public entertainment, and media publics. Kruse describes an enormous industry that depends on global information and communication flows made possible by a network linking racetracks, homes, off-track betting, farms, and auction sites. Racetrack architecture now allows for the presence of screens, most showing races from other locations. Online betting sites enable bettors to wager from home. Off-track betting facilities collect wagers on races from all over the country. Odds are set interactively through the pari-mutuel market system. Kruse considers the uses of public space, and its redefinition by public screens; the effect of interactive media on the racing industry, including networked, in-home betting; the “technopanic” over online poker and the popularity of in-home pari-mutuel wagering; and the use of social media by racing fans to share information and creative work with no financial payoff.

"Why would a decent sort like you want to live in this neighbourhood? You know this is the South End? Wrong side of the tracks."With these words, a Nanaimo taxi driver delivered Diane Foley to her new home in 1994. In pursuit of an enterprising beau with a handful of dubious South End rental properties, Diane truly "finds herself" in the life-changing new experience of running Big Sab, the transition house for men coming out of prison with addiction problems. And she finds these men, the lost boys of society, to be more intelligent, generous and talented than threatening or unhinged -- at least usually.Off the Tracks is a story about the human spirit willing to fight against enormous odds. It is about passion and ragged hope, self-destruction and unrequited love. Taking Diane's bold lead, we fall head over heels for a broken-down, close-knit community for an impossible "wanderlust" wolf dog, and for the social misfits at Big Sab. In doing so, we discover beauty off the tracks in the kindness and camaraderie of Nanaimo's South End. Delivered with Foley's welcoming perceptive and soulfully charming panache for storytelling, this book will make the reader laugh throughout but also weep when we least expect it, all the while making all of us -- on both sides of the tracks -- more human.

In Understanding Social Action, Promoting Human Rights, editors Ryan Goodman, Derek Jinks, and Andrew K. Woods bring together a stellar group of contributors from across the social sciences to apply a broad yet conceptually unified array of advanced social science research concepts to the study of human rights and human rights law. The book focus on three key methodological and substantive areas: actors, or social and political perspectives, including behavioral economics; communication, covering linguistics, media studies, and social entrepreneurship; and groups, via organizational theory, political economy, social movements, and complexity theory. Their goal is to provide a more comprehensive and more practical theory of social action, which necessarily requires a better understanding of individuals, organizations of individuals, and the ways in which both relate to other individuals and organizations.
