Every craft beer has a story, and part of the fun is learning where the liquid gold in your glass comes from. In Fifty Must-Try Craft Beers of Ohio, veteran beer writer Rick Armon picks the can’t-miss brews in a roundup that will handily guide everyone from the newest beer aficionado to those with the most seasoned palates. Some are crowd pleasers, some are award winners, some are just plain unusual—the knockout beers included here are a tiny sample of what Ohio has to offer. In the midst of the ongoing nationwide renaissance in local beer culture, Ohio has become a major center for the creation of quality craft brews, and Armon goes behind the scenes to figure out what accounts for the state’s beer alchemy. He asked the brewers themselves about the great idea or the happy accident that made each beer what it is. The book includes brewer profiles, quintessentially Ohio food pairings (sauerkraut balls and Cincinnati chili!), and more.

Brewing in Columbus began more than two centuries ago. The taps were only turned off during Prohibition and the short pause that preceded the modern craft beer explosion. For generations, names such as Hoster, Born, Schlee and Wagner secured staunch local loyalty for their brands and earned national acclaim for their brewmasters. Today, more than thirty craft breweries ply a prosperous trade in the capital city. After huge California craft brewery Stone became serious about Columbus for its East Coast expansion, Scotland's successful BrewDog chose central Ohio for its U.S. beachhead. Author Curtis Schieber celebrates the rise, fall and triumphant return of brewing in Ohio's capital.

Beginning in the mid-1800s, the beer-brewing industry in Cleveland experienced its most extensive growth due to the rapidly increasing immigrant population of mostly Germans, Czechs, and Irish. The breweries enjoyed great success until the Prohibition era closed all brewing operations down for 14 dry years. In 1933, the industry started anew, and Clevelanders were able to enjoy locally made beer for 50 more years before business conditions led to the industry's second demise. Today the industry has once again experienced a rebirth, this time on a smaller scale with the emergence of a number of popular brewpubs and microbreweries.

Many Ohioans remember the names Leisy, Erin Brew, P.O.C., Gold Bond, Crystal Rock, Carling Black Label, Burkhardt's, Burger, Souvenir, and Renner Old Oxford Ale when thinking of local beers from their youth. But how many remember White Rock, Bula, Zest, Tuscora, Red Band, American Maid, Old Lockport, or Milt and Gold Beers? Not to mention Zepp, Reno, Perlex, and Hock-Ola beverages from the fourteen dark years of Prohibition? Volume I of Brewing Beer In The Buckeye State is the culmination of more than ten years of research by the author, Robert A. Musson. Building on his previous history of Akron's brewing industry, Brewing Beer In The Rubber City, this new text takes on the industry throughout the entire eastern half of Ohio. Cities covered here include Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown, Ashtabula, Sandusky, Mansfield, East Liverpool, Steubenville, Canton, New Philadelphia, Zanesville, Lancaster, Marietta, and Ironton. The modern era is not forgotten either, as more than 40 brewpubs and microbreweries from the region are included, right up to the end of 2004. All in all, more than 240 brewery sites are chronicled over 342 pages. These span the entire spectrum of the brewing industry, from Nineteenth Century tavern owners who made beer for customers in back rooms to giants such as Carling, which churned out millions of barrels of beer each year and rose to become one of the nation's top five brewers before dwindling into obscurity. Along the way, more than 400 illustrations of buildings, people, and artifacts help to tell the story. In addition, included with the book is a DVD which contains an extended, 737-page version of this book, but in full color and with more than 3000 illustrations of people, advertisements, brewery collectibles, buildings, floor plans, etc. This version is presented as a series of pdf files that can be printed out by the reader if desired. Brewing Beer In The Buckeye State is meant for anyone with an interest in beer, brewing, Ohio history (or history in general), advertising, architecture....or anyone who likes reading about the growth and development of an industry over nearly two centuries, and the people who made that growth happen....especially with some rags-to-riches stories of immigrants who came to America with only dreams and made fortunes through their hard work, innovation, and some luck (both good and bad) as well. In this modern era, it can be refreshing to remember why people have and continue to come to the United States to build new lives.

Ohio's Craft Beers celebrates the variety of craft brewing in Ohio, offers appreciations of its quality, and reports on the renaissance of the brewer's art throughout the Buckeye State. Beautifully illustrated with color photographs, the book takes readers on a tour of more than 40 of Ohio's larger and more influential breweries and provides detailed descriptions of most of the others. Author and photographer Paul L. Gaston visited all of the featured breweries, talked to the owners and brewers, and tasted their beers, while photographing the pubs, brews, and customers. A generous "sampler" of the state's prime destinations for fans of good beer, Ohio's Craft Beers offers fascinating perspectives on brewing, regional history, and the distinctive cultures of a rapidly growing but highly principled industry. With Ohio's Craft Beers as your guide, you can sip an amber ale on the front porch of Mt. Carmel in suburban Cincinnati, make your way to the industrial chic of Warped Wing in Dayton, enjoy the historic ambience of Portsmouth, and still find exceptional beers in the more utilitarian settings of MadTree in Cincinnati, Actual in Columbus, or Hoppin' Frog in Akron. And in Willoughby you can return to the days of interurban travel while enjoying a full menu and creative brews at Willoughby Brewing Co. Above all, beer is about community. Brewers enjoy their craft, and craft beer drinkers enjoy meeting other craft beer drinkers. Put a copy of this book under your arm, make an excursion, walk in with a thirst, and toast your new friends with Ohio's Craft Beers
