Ohio's premier paranormal researcher looks for the spirits behind the stories Many of Ohio's historically significant locations have developed a reputation for being haunted. While it might be almost impossible to prove the validity of the paranormal tales that surround them, one thing is clear: ghost stories help to keep history alive. But the questions remain: How did these stories get started? More important, are any of them tied directly to actual historic events? And do any facts support the ghost lore? Rather than rely on second- and third-person accounts, author and paranormal researcher James A. Willis sat down with the owners, employees, and patrons of Ohio locations that are said to be haunted - the Arts Castle in Delaware, the Fairport Harbor Marine Museum, the Haunted Hydro in Fremont, Loveland Castle, the Merry-Go-Round Museum in Sandusky, the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, the Zanesville Community Theatre, and many others. After conducting more than 200 hours of one-on-one interviews, Willis was able to piece together unique histories for each location, including eyewitness accounts from people who believed they experienced paranormal activity. But Willis wasn't content to stop with first-person accounts. He also brought high-tech "ghost-hunting" equipment into each location and spent a night attempting to collect empirical data to see if he could experience a paranormal encounter himself. What were the results of these vigils? You'll have to read the book to find out Come along on a journey with Willis as he travels to the crossroads where history and folklore collide, and visit the fascinating Ohio locations where the past comes alive - in more ways than one

Paranormal expert Sherri Blake takes readers on a terrifying tour of Ohio’s infamous prison, where The Shawshank Redemption was filmed. Built on the site of a Civil War camp ravaged by disease, the Ohio State Reformatory first opened in 1896 to reform young offenders but eventually grew to house the most dangerous criminals. By the time the Mansfield institution closed, the prison was hosting a thousand more prisoners than it was designed to hold in “brutalizing and inhumane conditions.” Within the dark corridors made famous as the backdrop for The Shawshank Redemption, ghostly presences linger, from the dungeons of solitary confinement to the West Wing showers, where a bent pipe marks the place where a prisoner hanged himself. Venture behind the walls of this notorious prison with ghost tour guide Sherri Brake to discover the history and spirits that forever haunt these halls . . . if you dare. Includes photos!

A History of Moonville, Ohio and a Collection of its Haunting Tales, Revised Edition, is an updated version of a previous work the author had published back in 2008. This revised edition contains more detailed history about Moonville and its surrounding towns, such as Zaleski, on how they came to be, most notably that Moonville was named by the railroad after a general store proprietor rather than the man who had actually founded the town; and that Zaleski was named after a Polish/French financier who never came to America to see his namesake town. This revised edition also contains more haunting tales of what had happened to some of those who had lived and worked in this remote mining town in eastern Vinton County, Ohio, mainly covering those who had been involved in train accidents surrounding the still-standing tunnel as these trains came barreling through the area; plus, there are a few tales of murder as well. There are also a few light-hearted tales most notably that of a well-known English author who had passed through Moonville on his way to tour America back in the late 1860s as well as a story about some feisty sisters, in Athens, who took on the expanding railroad. There are human interest elements in all of this, most notably to me, is the story of the Dexters who had been enslaved in Virginia, escaping in the 1860s, having made their way to Moonville in order to live out their lives in freedom. This book is about preserving the history of a mining town that began back in the 1850s, thriving for nearly fifty years, before it began its long slide into history, though not completely forgotten, for it had been, once, a vital part of Ohios history, especially in the days leading up to the American Civil War; and that is why I wrote and revised this work - for Moonvilles history is a part of Ohios history.
