Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union almost a decade ago, there has been rapid evolution of interactions between the Western nations and individual countries of the former Soviet Union. As part of that interaction, the autonomous independent Republic of Azerbaijan through its scientific arm, the Geological Institute of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences under the Directorship of Academician Akif Ali-Zadeh and Deputy Director Ibrahim Guliev, arranged for personnel to be seconded to the University of South Carolina. The idea here was to see to what extent a quantitative understanding could be achieved of the evolution of the Azerbaijan part of the South Caspian Basin from dynamical, thermal and hydrocarbon perspectives. The Azeris brought with them copious amounts of data collected over decades which, together with the quantitative numerical codes available at USC, enabled a concerted effort to be put forward, culminating in two large books (Evolution of the South Caspian Basin: Geological Risks and Probable Hazards, 675 pps; and The South Caspian Basin: Stratigraphy, Geochemistry, and Risk Analysis, of which were published by the Azerbaijan Academy of 472 pps. ) both Sciences, and also many scientific papers. Thus, over the last four to five years an integrated comprehensive start has been made to understand the hydrocarbon proneness of the South Caspian Basin. In the course of the endeavor to understand the basinal evolution, it became clear that a variety of natural hazards occur in the Basin.

It is estimated that the Caspian Sea region holds in reserves 16-33 billion barrels of oil and 236-337 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in reserve. This new book explores details related to energy exploration and the potentials of trade and production in this geo-politically significant region. The impact of oil and oil-related interests has been subject of much speculation concerning the youngest emerging geopolitical oil bloc that stretches between the Black and Aral Seas. Its impact on economic, social and political conditions and development for the next century holds implications that reach from the Caspian heartland to the world's most distant shores. This book is the first attempt to present an exhaustive overview of the origins and development of the Caucaso-Caspian oil and gas industry. It also includes pointers on how oil '- and, to a lesser extent, gas '- has developed from a mere commodity into a potent stratego-political tool. Here historical data is also used to help analyse the way how the commercial role of oil in the light of world market developments relates to its political value in the eyes of local Azerbaijani, Turkmen, Kazakh powerbrokers as well as their Russian, Turkish, European and American counterparts. It is hoped that Oil and Gas in the Caucasus & Caspian will help place the region in its rightful global perspective and contribute to a better understanding of the tensions and their causes ever-present in a part of the world that is as promising as it is threatening.

"This volume is a collection of papers presented at a conference sponsored by the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) entitled 'Caspian Energy Resources: Implications for the Arab Gulf', held in Abu Dhabi, October 25-26, 1998. The Arab Gulf is currently the predominant oil exporting region in the world. How far does the energy resource potential of the Caspian basin represent a major challenge to the supremacy of the Arab Gulf? In the course of this volume, the authors explore the various dimensions of Caspian energy, ranging from contentious pipeline issues to the impact of Caspian oil on Gulf producers, OPEC member states and global markets. A discourse on the attraction of Caspian oil reserves underlines the rationale for massive foreign investment flooding the region. The aforementioned issues are studied from the perspectives of the major players and in the context of regional politics and the complex legal environment. Although the future impact of Caspian energy is yet to be determined, this volume offers valuable insight and comprehensive analysis on the major determinants affecting this strategically significant oil-rich region."--
