While the rise of social protection in the global North has been widely researched, we know little about the history of social protection in the global South. This volume investigates the experiences of four middle-income countries - Brazil, India, China and South Africa - from 1920 to 2020, analysing if, when, and how these countries articulated a concern about social issues and social cohesion. As the first in-depth study of the ideational foundations of social protection policies and programmes in these four countries, the contributions demonstrate that the social question was articulated in an increasingly inclusive way. The contributions identify the ideas, beliefs, and visions that underpinned the movement towards inclusion and social peace as well as counteracting doctrines. Drawing on perspectives from the sociology of knowledge, grounded theory, historiography, discourse analysis, and process tracing, the volume will be of interest to scholars across political science, sociology, political economy, history, area studies, and global studies, as well as development experts and policymakers.

The Presidents And The Poor written by Lawrence J. McAndrews and has been published by University Press of Kansas this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-22 with History categories.

Declaring a War on Poverty in 1964, President Lyndon Baines Johnson proclaimed: “We shall not rest until that war is won.” Since then, nine presidents have come and gone, each taking up the campaign in his own way—but the poor are still here. While all of these presidents have helped produce meaningful changes in the lives of the nation’s underclass, their setbacks have been at least as notable as their successes. The Presidents and the Poor asks why. This book is the first thorough study of the policies and politics of the presidents from Johnson to Barack Obama—what they did right and how they went wrong—in over half a century of fighting poverty. Many factors conspired to frustrate Democratic efforts to escalate Johnson’s War on Poverty and Republican attempts to unravel it: the rivalry of the two-party system; the frequency of congressional elections; the fluctuations of the economy; the demands of foreign policy; the inertia of the federal bureaucracy; the tensions among cities, states, and Washington, DC; and the priorities of the presidents, the press, and the public. Examining how each president tried to alleviate the suffering of the poor—including what resources he marshaled for which programs, policies, legal strategies, and political maneuvers—Lawrence J. McAndrews details how and why none of the presidents were able to surmount the enormous socioeconomic, political, and cultural barriers to eradicating poverty. Comprehensive and engaging, rich in primary research, and sobering in its conclusions, his book brings much-needed attention and clarity to an enduring yet too often neglected problem.

A university campus is a place with special resonance: conjuring images of cloistered quadrangles and wood-panelled libraries, often echoing centuries of scholarly tradition. And yet it is also a place of cutting-edge science, interactive learning, youth, vibrancy, and energy. It is this dual nature which makes the physical environment of a university so dynamic as well as a highly challenging landscape to design and manage successfully. Today, the scale of the pressures and the rate of change facing higher education institutions are greater than ever.? Squeezed public spending, rising tuition fees and the growing education ambitions of developing nations are set against a backdrop of rapid technological progress and changing pedagogies. What are the repercussions for the physical realities of university planning and architecture? And how are university campuses adapting to contend with these pressures? University Trends introduces the most significant, widespread and thought-provoking trends in campus design today. Part 1 identifies current trends such as starchitecture, large-scale campus extensions, adaptive re-use, and international branch campuses. Part 2 profiles each trend via highly-illustrated, global case studies of well-publicised as well as lesser-known projects. The essential guide to current and future trends in campus design.
