der Band enthält mit 405 Briefen die überlieferte Korrespondenz von Friedrich Engels mit etwa 130 Briefpartnern zwischen Oktober 1889 und November 1890. 172 Briefe an Engels werden hier erstmals veröffentlicht. Der Briefwechsel gewährt Einblick in eine Umbruchszeit der europäischen Arbeiterbewegungen. Gewerkschaften und Arbeiterparteien erhielten neue Impulse durch Streiks und Demonstrationen und gelangten 1889/90 an eine Wende hin zu Massenorganisationen, angeführt von britischen Gewerkschaften, die in der Folge des Hafenarbeiter-Streiks im August 1889 erstmals un- und angelernte Arbeiter neben Facharbeitern versammelten. Der 1. Mai 1890 wurde mit zahlreichen Veranstaltungen europaweit zu einer eindrucksvollen Demonstration der neuen Stärke und zugleich der internationalen Vernetzung, denn Ausgangspunkt war eine Resolution eines Zusammenschlusses von Arbeiterorganisationen im Juli 1889, der als II. Internationale bekannt wurde. Parlamente und Wahlen standen im Zentrum des Interesses, etwa in Frankreich im September/Oktober 1889 oder im Deutschen Kaiserreich im Februar 1890. Ihre Ergebnisse wurden von Engels und seinen Briefpartnern genauestens beobachtet und ausgiebig diskutiert: die Mobilisierung von weit über einer Millionen Wählern für die deutschen Sozialdemokraten, ebenso wie etwa die Bildung einer sozialistischen Gruppe in der französischen Deputiertenkammer und im Pariser Stadtrat. In den europäischen Ländern warben viele verschiedene politische Richtungen und Gruppierungen um die Gunst der wachsenden Zahl von Arbeitern. Ihre Auseinandersetzungen spiegeln sich deutlich im Austausch zwischen Engels und seinen Briefpartnern. Insbesondere Frankreich spielt hierbei eine wichtige Rolle, wo die Konfliktlinien nicht nur zwischen revolutionären und reformerisch ausgerichteten Kräften verliefen, sondern auch um die Haltung zu Boulangers nationalistischer Bewegung gestritten wurde. Ebenso wichtig ist Deutschland, wo sich bereits Anfang des Jahres 1890 abzeichnete, dass das Sozialistengesetz nicht mehr verlängert und damit die sozialdemokratische Partei in die Legalität zurückkehren würde. Dies setzte, zusammen mit dem Zulauf neuer Mitglieder, einen Diskussionsprozess in Gang, in dem heftig über Ziele und Mittel zukünftiger Politik gestritten wurde. Schließlich ist auch die Arbeit von Engels am Nachlass von Marx ein Thema in den Briefen, insbesondere am dritten Band des „Kapital“. Ebenso finden sich Hinweise zu anderen Arbeiten von Engels, wie der vierten Auflage des Kommunistischen Manifestes.

Without a doubt Karl Marx’ philosophical work had a huge impact on “western” concepts of society and economics that still reverberates in the philosophical discourse. In the analysis of this ongoing discourse however the work of Chinese scholars is underrepresented. This book is a translation of the reference work «Back to Marx» first published in 1999 in the PRC. The book is a serious inquiry into the interrelationships between Marx‘s political and economic philosophy, based on careful and systematic reading of a wide range of textual sources, including—in particular—the newly published second edition of the Complete Works of Marx and Engels (MEGA2), which collects notes, drafts, manuscripts, and excerpts previously unavailable to the scholarly community. The author Zhang Yibing teaches philosophy at the University of Nanjing and is one of the foremost scholars of Marxism in the PRC, a Marxist analyst of contemporary philosophical issues. At the same time he is the Vice Chancellor of the University.

What explains France’s unique Left? Many works have reflected upon the importance of Marxism in France, yet few studies have been devoted to the man who did most to introduce Marxism into its political culture: the today near-forgotten figure of Jules Guesde. It was with Guesde that Karl Marx drafted the world’s first Marxist program, and Guesde who aroused the enthusiasm of countless worker-militants who saw him as their most important leader. Jules Guesde represents the first book-length study of the French socialist leader translated into the English language. For the radical Left today, Guesde is often considered a dogmatist who supported the Union sacrée during World War I and rejected the Bolshevik revolution; for the governmental Left, he embodies an intransigent ideologue who held back the modernization of the French Left. Throughout Jules Guesde, Jean-Numa Ducange argues that it is impossible to study the history of the French socialist movement without a close look at this singular figure and offers a fuller picture of the deep transformations of the Left and Marxism in France from the late 19th century up to the present. This scholarly biography of Jules Guesde seeks to put Guesde’s record on a properly historical footing, closely analysing both archival sources and accounts by his contemporaries. Chapter One begins with his early life and the mark left on him by the Paris Commune and exile. Chapter Two emphasises Guesde’s importance as leader of a distinct current of French socialism, recognised by figures like Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Chapter Three sees Guesde become an MP for working-class Roubaix, exploring the contradictions between his revolutionary rhetoric and concrete political practice. Chapter Four turns to the years following his electoral defeat in 1898 and his renewed intransigence in the period of the Dreyfus affair and rivalry with Jaurès. Chapter Five explores his key role in the formation of a united Socialist Party. Chapter Six examines the test of World War I and Guesde’s anguish at the divisions of French socialism. The book then concludes with an examination of Guesde’s contested legacy, as both a “founding father” and figure subject to often pejorative framings.
