"Olalla" is a short story by the Scottish novelist, poet, essayist and travel writer Robert Louis Stevenson. It was first published in the Christmas 1885 issue of The Court and Society Review, then re-published in 1887 as part of the collection The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables. It is set in Spain during the Peninsular War. A Scottish soldier recovering from his injuries in Spain goes to stay with a local family, where he eventually meets the beautiful Olalla and falls in love with her. But things won't be smooth sailing for either of them...

It fells indeed rather oddly; it was but the other day the Padre came in from the country; and as he and I are old friends, although of contrary professions, he applied to me in a matter of distress among some of his parishioners. This was a family--but you are ignorant of Spain, and even the names of our grandees are hardly known to you; suffice it, then, that they were once great people, and are now fallen to the brink of destitution. Nothing now belongs to them but the residencia, and certain leagues of desert mountain, in the greater part of which not even a goat could support life. But the house is a fine old place, and stands at a great height among the hills, and most salubriously; and I had no sooner heard my friend's tale, than I remembered you. I told him I had a wounded officer, wounded in the good cause, who was now able to make a change; and I proposed that his friends should take you for a lodger. Instantly the Padre's face grew dark, as I had maliciously foreseen it would. It was out of the question, he said. Then let them starve, said I, for I have no sympathy with tatterdemalion pride. There-upon we separated, not very content with one another; but yesterday, to my wonder, the Padre returned and made a submission: the difficulty, he said, he had found upon enquiry to be less than he had feared; or, in other words, these proud people had put their pride in their pocket. I closed with the offer; and, subject to your approval, I have taken rooms for you in the residencia. The air of these mountains will renew your blood; and the quiet in which you will there live is worth all the medicines in the world.'

Synopsis: The protagonist of Olalla is a wounded soldier, who travels to Spain to recover. There he meets a mysterious and charming young woman, Olalla, the daughter of his host, and part of a family that hides an abominable secret. It is the story about an impossible love in a natural setting with strong romantic tones, where two other motifs intersect: a reflection on the soul and the theme of lycanthropy. Olalla's manor house is set in another time, in the history of a closed lineage within which she is only a last moment of lucidity. The girl is jealous of her own eyes, her hair and her hands, and even her own soul. Every part and time of his life already lived and belonging without reference to the closed cycle of the history of his people. Thus, the past overflows his body and took over his senses, as if the dead were reluctant to leave his blood. "We speak of the soul, but the soul is in the lineage," says Olalla, who cannot deliver in love a soul detached from its own conscience.

Robert Louis Stevenson's vampire novella 'Olalla' is one of the great overlooked works of 19th century Gothic fiction. Published as a Christmas ghost story in 1885 (a year after 'The Body Snatcher' and a few months before The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde) it has been patronised and underrated by most commentators -- not least by its own author. In his 1888 essay 'A Chapter on Dreams', Stevenson dismisses 'Olalla' as a 'not very defensible story'2 in which he struggled to fit his original vision--which took the form of a dream--into the framework of a conventional narrative. Damning of his own efforts, and of his (admittedly weak) ending in particular, Stevenson consigned his story to more than a century of neglect by critics and readers. Strangely enough, 'Olalla' has benefited but little from the obsession with all things vampiric that marks our era of Twilight and True Blood. A far more turgid and uneven piece of prose, Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula is pored over today with a reverence that is normally reserved for Holy Writ. The soft-core lesbian bloodsucking of Sheridan Le Fanu's 'Carmilla' (1877) has won a new and appreciative audience among feminist scholars. Meanwhile, a genuinely artful and ambiguous work like 'Olalla' is left to languish unread on the back pages of a few Stevenson anthologies.
