This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1918 edition. Excerpt: ...a daughter of O. P. Campbell, and they are the parents of one child, Rebe Alline. /Villiam Clifton Latimer married Louise Dunlap, a daughter of William Dunlap, who is now living at the age of eighty-six and is apparently in the best of health. As mentioned above, William Clifton is now carrying on the farming interests from which his father had retired some years since, and has, since he began this work, been very successful. To them the following children were born: Greason R.; William C.; Ruth, died in infancy; Laura Louise, and James Dunlap. A resident of Vestmoreland county, Pennsylvania, all his life, Mr. Latimer, Sr. has demonstrated through the years of his career here an ability as a farmer and a disinterested citizen that has won him great respect. He is intensely public-spirited, and in both his public and private life an example of integrity and sterling manhood worthy of emulation. He is a vital force for good in his community and aids where he does not lead in all efforts to promote the spiritual and temporal welfare of his fellow-men. His value as a citizen is generally felt and recognized and there is no more highly respected figure in the life of the community to-day than Mr. Latimer. It is always pleasant to witness the achievement of men who have combined their own 'personal advantage with the achievement of the common weal, and who have labored for ends in which such a combination may be found. It seems to be growing less possible to enjoy this pleasure to-day, when ideals are narrowing and the leaders in our financial world are coming to consider less and less the effects of their operations upon the fortunes of others. But with such men as Mr. Latimer, the retired farmer, the spectacle may be seen at its best. With...

Excerpt from Old and New Westmoreland, Vol. 1 It is without trepidation that the publishers lay before their patrons the following work, Old and New Westmoreland. Its title embraces the territory in Westmoreland County at its formation in 1773, a region now generally known as Southwestern Pennsylvania. The work includes a complete history of Westmoreland County as it formerly existed, up until Washington, Fayette and Allegheny counties were carved from it. Indeed, the author has devoted more space to the formative period of this section than any previous writer, and we believe he has thoroughly laid the interesting features of its history before the reader. For a third of a century after the first settlements were made in Southwestern Pennsylvania, the history of this section is made up of a strange commingling of tragedy and romance on the one hand, and of privations and exertions on the other. Though the reader may be sometimes taken away from the immediate locality of which the work treats, he will always find that the subject under consideration is one which deeply concerns Westmoreland history. The narrative as told here is made as nearly chronological as is possible. The publishers feel confident that Mr. Boucher has placed before the readers in a pleasing and forceful manner the salient facts of the long and interesting story, and that he has included much of that purely antiquarian lore, which is to many the most instructive and delightful feature in history. Formed, as the County of Westmoreland was, before the Revolution, the story of its patriotism in that struggle is and must ever remain, one of its brightest pages. The reader will find that the author has delved deeply into the biography of the makers of Westmoreland, giving of all of the prominent men of the past all of the authentic information that can be gathered concerning them. The work in two volumes relates entirely to the past, it being seldom, indeed, that the author has even mentioned the name of any one now living. He wishes us to state that he has been entirely untrammelled in this matter, and if he has omitted entirely, or given too much prominence to any event, or hero of the past, it is entirely a mistake in judgment, and is not due to any obligation on the part of the writer. In view of the foregoing, the publishers feel confident in reasserting that the two volumes of Old and New Westmoreland, being practically a history of Southwestern Pennsylvania, will, when carefully considered, meet with the approval of the intelligent and public-spirited people. Once the beehive coke oven was perfected in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the coal and coke industry began to flourish and supply other fledgling industries with the fuel they needed to succeed. The thrust of this growth came from Henry Clay Frick, who opened his first coal mines in the Morgan Valley of Fayette County in 1871. There, he helped lead the industry, making it the major developmental force in industrial America. This book traces the birth and growth of the early coal and coke industry from 1870 to 1920, primarily in Fayette and Westmoreland Counties. Beyond Frick's importance to the industry, other major topics covered in this history include the lives and struggles of the miners and immigrants who worked in the industry, the growth of unions and the many strikes in the region, and the attempts to clean the surrounding waterways from the horrific pollution that resulted from industrial development. Perhaps the most significant fact is that this book uses primary sources contemporary with the golden age of the coal and coke industry. That effort offers an alternative view and helps repair the common portrayal of Frick as corrupt by showing his work as that of an industrial genius.
