English Fairy Tales written by F. A. Steel and has been published by Pan Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-11 with Juvenile Fiction categories.

Fairy tales are written both to entertain and to educate. Published in the shadow of the First World War, F. A. Steel's retellings of forty-one English fairy tales form a classic collection of stories, ranging from the familiar - 'Jack and the Beanstalk', 'Little Red Riding-Hood' and 'The Three Little Pigs' - to the perhaps less well known - 'The Black Bull of Norroway', 'Nix Nought Nothing' and 'The Red Ettin'. Originally published in 1918, it reflects the nationalistic concerns of the period. Steel takes the reader on a journey, from Cornwall to Bamburgh Castle via a palace by the sea, as well as high into the sky, where a giant lives. The magical tales in English Fairy Tales are brought to life by one of the best-known illustrators of the time, Arthur Rackham. Designed to appeal to the book lover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautiful gift editions of much loved classic titles. Macmillan Collector's Library are books to love and treasure.

Excerpt from The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm The inference is plain that these tales must have had a common origin; but whether the stories were carried from one land to another by early traders, or whether their possession by widely scattered peoples proves these groups to have sprung from one original stock, students of mythology have not yet decided. Certain it is that many of the tales are very old, having undergone numerous changes in the course of years, with such omissions and additions as were need ful to adapt them to the country using them. A ver sion of the Cinderella story, for instance, as old records show, was current in Iceland at least one thou sand years ago; while the Wolf and Kids story can be traced in Greek mythology antedating the Christian era. Fairy Tales From Folk Lore Classic Reprint written by Herschel Williams and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-25 with categories.

Herschel Williams selected these twelve fairy tales from a great geographic range, mostly from across Europe, with two from North America and one from Japan. The tone of this story book is gentle and familiar, but without shying away from the occasionally gruesome details that make fairytales so enticing for younger readers. While many of the tropes are similar to the fairytales we are all familiar with from the Grimm brothers, with lots of events occurring in threes and forgotten younger siblings often turning out to have the wisdom, kindness or bravery their older siblings lack, these are a set of entirely different stories from around the world. The collective imagination of the various fairy tale tellers must have been limitless to create such a wide range of these magical stories. In the first of these stories, the Irish story Yellow Lily, the hero is a cocky young prince who loves to gamble, and is saved from a grisly fate by the eponymous Yellow Lily. Yellow Lily is a heroine who doesn't mind using her wits to lash the hero when he needs it, rather than a merely a meek story device. This story also contains the great tongue twister "Yellow Lily of Loch Lein," try saying that with your mouth full! Each of the other stories are at least as fascinating, such as the Scandinavian tale The Mysterious Prince which starts like Beauty And The Beast and ends very differently, or the Canadian The Goddess Of Light, which reads like a cross between Bluebeard and a creation myth. Princes, princesses, elves and giants all abound in these stories, and the evil ones are guaranteed to get their comeuppance. Excerpt from Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales Long ago, when wishes often came true, there lived a King Whose daughters were all handsome, but the youngest was so beautiful that the sun himself, who has seen everything, was bemused every time he shone over her because of her beauty. Near the royal castle there was a great dark wood, and in the wood under an old linden tree was a well; and when the day was hot, the Kings daughter used to go forth into the wood and sit by the brink of the cool well, and if the time seemed long, she would take out a golden ball, and throw it up and catch it again, and this was her favorite pastime. Now it happened one day that the golden ball, instead of falling back into the maiden's little hand which had sent it aloft, dropped to the ground near the edge of the well and rolled in. The King's daughter followed it with her eyes as it sank, but the well was deep, so deep that the bottom could not be seen. Then she began to weep, and she wept and wept as if she could never be comforted. And in the midst of her weeping she heard a voice saying to her, What ails you, King' 3 daughter? Your tears would melt a heart of stone. And when she looked to see where the voice came from, there was nothing but a frog stretching his thick ugly head out of the water. Oh, is it you, old waddler? Said she; I weep because my golden ball has fallen into the well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Study of Fairy Tales In the study of fairy tales, as of any portion of the curriculum or as in any presentation of subject-mat ter, three main elements must unite to form one com bined Whole: the child, the subject, and the teaching of the subject. In behalf of the child I want to show how fairy tales contain his interests and how they are means for the expression of his instincts and for his development in purpose, in initiative, in judg ment, in organization of ideas, and in the creative return possible to him. In behalf of the subject I want to show What fairy tales must possess as classics, as literature and composition, and as short-stories; to trace their history, to classify the types, and to supply the sources of material. In behalf of the teaching of fairy tales I want to describe the telling of the tale the preparation it involves, the art required in its presentation, and the creative return to be expected from the child.
