Excerpt from Old Hawaiian Carvings: Found in a Cave on the Island of Hawaii To one familiar with these caves the vestibule, as it may be called, is the least interesting portion; it is a tunnel of varying Size and irregular section, Often shrink ing to a passage hardly large enough to admit a man's body, then expanding into a hall of considerable height, and with numerous ramifications, some small as rat holes, others of a size to admit a horse. In the old and important caves these side passages are generally walled tip, and originally this was done so effectually as to conceal the entrance, but earthquakes and time have loosened the dry stone wall, and it is now possible to detect it, unless the deposited and decaying bones cover it, and these one hesitates to disturb unnecessarily. Behind these walls lie the interests Of the cave. One may pull down with great labor in the dark and ill ventilated cave the carefully placed wall and find in the chamber behind it perhaps nothing, perhaps a few crumbling bones or a decayed calabash. Ancient Hawaiian Civilization takes us back to Hawaii's " stone age," when there wasn't an alphabet, numbering system, or other civilized distinctions as we know them. Still rules of living, modes, and customs permitted large numbers of people to live healthfully and happily throughout the islands. This fascinating history of Hawaii is " must" reading for anyone who has been, wants to go, or lives in America 's 50th State. This book authoritatively introduces the general reader to what was once a golden era of Hawaiian history and culture, the time when the islands were strictly Hawaiian Hawaii. Though the islands are almost completely westernized today, many facets from this golden age remain to make America's 50th State a " living laboratory" for the cultural and social study of racial migration and assimilation. This volume represents the knowledge and experience of no less than 16 scholars. The combined areas of specialization by no less than 16 authors have been carefully selected and grouped to make up this volume. Together, the authors comprise a truly formidable forum of Hawaiian thought and learning. Ethnologists, geologists, zoologists, and medical doctors are but a few of the areas of specialization represented in these pages.

Given its relatively late encounter with the West, Hawaii offers an exciting opportunity to study a society whose traditional lifeways and technologies were recorded in native oral traditions and written documents before they were changed by contact with non-Polynesian cultures. This book in the SAA Press Current Perspectives Series chronicles the role of archaeology in constructing a narrative of Hawaii’s cultural past, focusing on material evidence dating from the Polynesians’ first arrival on Hawaii’s shores about a millennium ago to the early decades of settlement by Americans and Europeans in the nineteenth century. A final chapter discusses new directions taken by native Hawaiians toward changing the practice of archaeology in the islands today.
