The earth trembled beneath Ruth's feet for a moment, then, all at once, she understood. The light in the attic window, the marked paragraph in the paper, and the death notices—why, yes, the Charles Winfield who had married Abigail Weatherby was Miss Ainslie's lover, and Carl was his son. “He went away!” Miss Ainslie's voice came again to Ruth, when she told her story, with no hint of her lover's name. He went away, and soon afterward, married Abigail Weatherby, but why? Was it love at first sight, or did he believe that his sweetheart was dead? Then Carl was born and the mother died. Twelve years afterward, he followed her—broken hearted. Carl had told her that his father could not bear the smell of lavender nor the sight of any shade of purple—and Miss Ainslie always wore lavender and lived in the scent of it—had he come to shrink from it through remorse...FROM THE BOOKS.

A young girl from the city, Ruth Thorne, visits her spinster aunt's house in the New England countryside. While exploring the attic, Ruth discovers a chest of mementos from her aunt's romantic past. Journalist Carl Winfield helps her unravel the past, and soon she finds herself reliving the old romance. A sweet Victorian romance novel with a bit of mystery, "Lavender and Old Lace" is Myrtle Reed’s most famous work. Myrtle Reed (1874-1911) was an American author, poet and journalist. A best-selling romance novelist and Chicago socialite, she was one of America’s best-known authors in the first decade of the 20th century. Her most famous works include "Lavender and Old Lace" (1902), "Threads of Grey and Gold" (1913) and "A Weaver of Deams" (1911). Reed also wrote numerous cookbooks.

Excerpt from Old Lace, a Handbook for Collectors: An Account of the Different Styles of Lace; Their History, Characteristics Manufacture It may, perhaps, seem necessary to give some reason for the appearance of a new work dealing with hand-made lace, especially as two books on this subject have appeared in England alone in the course of the year. It has been suggested to me, however, by many collectors, that the historical aspect of lace has been dealt with in previous works, almost to the exclusion of its technical and artistic side. Mrs Palliser's history (first issued in 1865), which I re-edited in 1902, is almost exhaustive in certain aspects, and a storehouse of valuable material collected by the author relative not only to the history of lace, but of embroidery and costume. But even since 1902 new material, new facts have come to light in works dealing with lace of various countries. I have, therefore, in this book, while giving the chief landmarks in the history of each lace in each important centre of production - especially those that affected the quality and design of the lace produced - included or referred to these fresh facts and information. The French have been especially diligent in investigating the origins and development of their national industries. I have also been interested in tracing, where possible, the influence of contemporary art and design upon the development of lace, which is, naturally, largely subject to the influences of and fashions in textiles, as may be seen by a comparison of French patterned textiles with laces of the three great periods which correspond roughly to the reigns of Louis XIV., XV., and XVI. As the very large number of illustrations in each chapter are arranged in order of date, it will be easy for readers to follow this progress. For this reason, dated pieces - though these are naturally rare - have been illustrated wherever possible. This volume collects short horror comics stories from Tales From the Crypt, Vault of Horror, Haunt of Fear, Crime SuspenStories, and Impact ― including a rare EC gem that hasn’t been seen since its original publication more than 65 years ago! These stories, which "Ghastly" Graham Ingels drew while he was at the pinnacle of his powers, include tales such as "Accidents and Old Lace." Three sweet, little old ladies weave tapestries depicting the gruesome deaths of real people, but when an art dealer commits murder to get a tapestry of his own, he discovers just how closely art imitates … death. In "Marriage Vow," a woman returns from the grave to fulfill her wifely duty to her murderous husband, until death does them … together; and in "The Sliceman Cometh," an executioner during the French Revolution can’t escape the severed head of an innocent man.

The New York Times bestselling author of Gossamer Ghost returns to the Big Easy and the historic Garden District, where scrapbook shop owner Carmela Bertrand discovers a bride-to-be murdered in the legendary Lafayette Cemetery… Carmela couldn’t imagine a finer evening than dinner at Commander’s Palace with her beau, Detective Edgar Babcock. The food and the company are equally divine—with the exception of Isabelle Black stopping by to brag about her upcoming wedding. Resuming the romance with a walk in the evening air, the couple is interrupted once again—this time by a terrifying scream from inside the cemetery. Having just seen Isabelle, Carmela and Edgar now find her lying across an aboveground tomb, strangled to death with a piece of vintage lace. Carmela would rather leave the investigating to Edgar, but she can’t say no to Isabelle’s sister Ellie, the tarot card reader at Juju Voodoo, when she asks her to help. As she untangles the enemies of Isabelle’s past, Carmela hopes she can draw out the killer before someone else gets cold feet. INCLUDES SCRAPBOOKING TIPS
