A spellbinding account of the rapacious pursuit of the most exquisite paintings in the world In the Gilded Age, newly wealthy and culturally ambitious Americans began to compete for Europe's extraordinary Old Master pictures, causing a major migration of art across the Atlantic. Old Masters, New World is a backstage look at the cutthroat competition, financial maneuvering, intrigue, and double-dealing often involved in these purchases, not to mention the seductive power of the ravishing paintings that drove these collectors-including financier J. Pierpont Morgan, sugar king H. O. Havemeyer, Boston aesthete Isabella Stewart Gardner, and industrialist Henry Clay Frick. Packed with stunning reproductions, this is an ideal gift book for art lovers and history buffs alike.

Excerpt from Old Masters and New: Essays in Art Criticism These essays, in their original form, have appeared at various times during the last twenty years, about half of them in The Nation, the others, with one exception, in various periodicals. In preparing them for appearance here I could do no less than submit them to a pretty thorough revision, removing everything that seemed temporary in its interest and making such additions as, in some instances, have amounted pretty nearly to re-writing. I hope that the result will be found to have more consecutiveness and to be less ill-proportioned than might perhaps be expected in a volume thus made up of scattered papers produced at wide intervals of time by one mainly engaged in other work. The book cannot, indeed, make any pretension to be a systematic history of art, although it deals, incidentally, with many more artists than those whose names figure in its chapter-headings. It is rather a series of appreciations of individual masters, though something like a general view of the course of painting since the sixteenth century may, perhaps, be made out from it. When in their lives do great artists produce their greatest art? Do they strive for creative perfection throughout decades of painstaking and frustrating experimentation, or do they achieve it confidently and decisively, through meticulous planning that yields masterpieces early in their lives? By examining the careers not only of great painters but also of important sculptors, poets, novelists, and movie directors, Old Masters and Young Geniuses offers a profound new understanding of artistic creativity. Using a wide range of evidence, David Galenson demonstrates that there are two fundamentally different approaches to innovation, and that each is associated with a distinct pattern of discovery over a lifetime. Experimental innovators work by trial and error, and arrive at their major contributions gradually, late in life. In contrast, conceptual innovators make sudden breakthroughs by formulating new ideas, usually at an early age. Galenson shows why such artists as Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Cézanne, Jackson Pollock, Virginia Woolf, Robert Frost, and Alfred Hitchcock were experimental old masters, and why Vermeer, van Gogh, Picasso, Herman Melville, James Joyce, Sylvia Plath, and Orson Welles were conceptual young geniuses. He also explains how this changes our understanding of art and its past. Experimental innovators seek, and conceptual innovators find. By illuminating the differences between them, this pioneering book provides vivid new insights into the mysterious processes of human creativity.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... HOLBEIN THE name of Holbein calls up Immediately in the mind a series of portraits somewhat stiff in attitude, rather primitive in their lack of light and shade, but incomparable in their masterly draughtsmanship and their expression of character. To the true connoisseur it calls up first of all, perhaps, that wonderful series of drawings preserved at Windsor Castle, studies for portraits of persons connected with the English court, which are even more remarkable than the paintings executed from some of them for the masterful use of what seem inadequate means--drawings which express the full power of the sixteenth century in the technique of a hundred years ear her. Considered in itself there is something enigmatic in this contrast of matter and manner, but the puzzle becomes more baffling when one considers these drawings and paintings in connection with the early work of the man who produced them. We are too apt to forget this early work. When we begin to study it we find that Holbein's development was in the reverse direction of that of almost all other artists, that his methods grow more primitive as he grows older, and that his earlier productions, if we except the mere prentice work of his extreme youth, are much freer in movement, richer in composition, fuller in light and shade, every way more modern than the works of his full maturity. Born at Augsburg, almost at the very end of the fifteenth century, twenty-six years later than Diirer and twenty years after the date usually given as that of the birth of Titian, Holbein was a child of the high Renaissance and, slowly as the Renaissance crept northward, fell early under Italian influence. At Basel, where he began his independent career at about the age of seventeen or eighteen, ..
