Excerpt from Old Plymouth Trails He who would see Plymouth and the Pilgrim land about it as the Pilgrims saw it may do so. Nature holds grimly onto her own and sedulously heals the scars that man makes. Beat to wind ward in the December twilight following that first trail Of the Pilgrim pinnace, listen to the sullen boom Of the breakers on the cliff, hear the growl Of the surf-mauled pebbles on Plymouth beach, feel the sting Of the freezing spray and the bitter grip Of the north wind and you shall find this first Pilgrim trail the same today as it was three hun dred years ago. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

"All Plymouth is made up of the results of pilgrimage. How many scores of fathoms deep the real Plymouth shore lies I do not know. It is down there somewhere where it cooled into bathylithic crust back in the gray dawn of time when the earth was made. There it is part of the same ledge of which Scituate and Cohasset are built. All above that is terminal moraine, rock detritus piled upon rock foundation by the glacier. Plymouth Rock itself thus came joy riding from some ledge up Boston way, alighting from this first and greatest New England Transportation System only a few hundred thousand years before Mary Chilton arrived to set foot upon it."

Excerpt from Pilgrim Trails: A Plymouth-to-Provincetown Sketchbook "There!" said the artist, "isn't that a nautical-looking house?" When the artist says that a house is nautical, he means that it looks as if it had been built by seafaring men; not by wealthy ship-owners, but by generations of skippers and men before the mast. When you build a nautical house, you should begin more than a hundred years ago with a small cottage on the side-hill over the harbor, and add on a snug cabin now and then, tucking in a shipshape companionway here and there, and running a new section out along the slope. If you like to indulge your taste in roofs, you make a different kind for every addition. One section may be gable, another lean-to, and the one-story addition may run out as long as you please, shaped on top something like the roof of a barge. Simply fit your building to the ups and downs of the land and the ways of the wind. A bit of faded blue paint somewhere on the blinds or near the door, and all your roofing weathered by many hundred harbor gales, and your house is nautical. "[...]ashamed of itself, ceased its outcry in the darkness of full night and the chill of a white frost followed on all the land. In the darkest hour of this night, I saw a thin point of light rise out of the mystery of the sea far to the eastward, the tiny sail of the shallop of the old moon, blown landward by little winds of dawn, making port on the shore of "hither Manomet." In the velvety blackness of this ultimate hour of night the slender sail curved[...]".

Excerpt from The Old Coast Road: From Boston to Plymouth To tell the story of an old city is like cutting down through the various layers of a fruity layer cake. When you turn the Slice over, you see that every piece is a cross-section. So al most every locality and phase of this venerable metropolis could be studied, and really should be studied, according to its historical strata: Colonial, Provincial, Revolutionary, economic, and literary. All of these periods have piled up their associations one upon the other, and all of them must be somewhat understood if one would sincerely comprehend What has aptly been called not a city, but a state of mind. It is as impossible for the casual sojourner to grasp the significance of the multifarious historical and literary events which have transpired here as for a few pages to outline them. Wherever one stands in Boston suggests the church of San Clemente in Rome, where, you remember, there are three churches built one upon the other. However, those who would take the lovely journey from Boston to Ply mouth needs must make some survey, no matter how superficial, of their starting-place. And perhaps the best spot from which to begin is the Common. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Plymouth 0 tell the tale of Plymouth in a small book has been by no means an easy task. A longer book would have been in some ways much easier there is such abundant wealth of material that the most rigid selection and rejection have been necessary. There is also a difficulty in giving each period its true proportion, neglecting none in favour of another and the necessity of recording many facts, yet unitmg these in a stream of readable narrative. It will be clearly understood that this is not intended as a guide-book, and that it omits much which the ordinary guide-book would give. Many particulars about the dockyards, the naval and military institutions, the commercial activities, must be sought elsewhere. The endeavour here has been to View the Three Towns as a unity from the commencement, though it was Only themyenaf i914 that saw their final union; and it is hoped that no reader will detect any local prejudice or preference. The fact that the book is published in the Tercen tenary year of the M ayflower's sailing, has added a desire that some readers across the Atlantic may.
