This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... THE PATRIARCHS "After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, 'Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward."--Gen. xv. I. THE conditions of the life of men are indeed greatly altered since Adam first lived in Eden in the full and constant intercourse with God, which was as yet undisturbed by sin. But God, we may well believe, has not altered His own purpose. Man was created for free and willing response to Him. It was the inevitable possibility, when man was made capable of uncoerced and freely chosen service, that he might not choose aright. He has made the self-willed choice, and great and increasing harm has come of it. But God does not abandon His design. The conditions are grievously changed for the worse, and response among men to the voice of God is rare, but it is not wholly absent. From the first, it would seem, in the midst of much evil and rebellion, God is not wholly forgotten. Here and there a man is found who, at least in some measure, "walks with God" and knows Him. God is still ready to reveal Himself, still desirous to communicate the knowledge of Himself to man; still He would evoke, wherever man is ready, the response of loyal and faithful devotion. He waits for the answer wherever throughout the whole of humankind it may be found. He "is no respecter of persons, but in every nation he that feareth Him and worketh righteousness is acceptable to Him." But for a long time there is little or no regard. And, at last, when in course of time some remembrance and desire and response are found, it is mainly in one godly man and his children, and in the people descended from him, who are thus enabled to become a centre of very gradual but growing light to the world. It seems, ...

"The Hebrew Scriptures, far from being merely a prelude leading up to the New Testament, are replete with theological values that can illumine the Christian life today. The author explicates this thesis by demonstrating how these values are underscored in Old Testament stories. He groups the representative samples of these stories in six chapters: Beginning, Moses and the Exodus, Brothers, Heroes, Kings, and Prophets. Each chapter shows how these "old" stories shed light on the values, concerns, challenges, and ideals of Christians today. Parish Bible studies, college and seminary courses on Old Testament and on preaching, and anyone who wishes to learn more about how Scripture can enrich their lives will benefit from this book."--BOOK JACKET.

After a close study of the Genesis narrative and the numerous attempts of harmonizing it with science, the present writer has become thoroughly convinced that it is impossible to establish a complete, detailed harmony between the Genesis account of creation and the established facts of science without doing violence to the Bible or science or both. -from "Chapter II: The Old Testament and Modern Science" With a up-to-the minute modernity refreshing in a book almost a century old, this 1912 gingerly walks the precarious line between acknowledging the achievements of science and recognizing the wisdom and comfort accorded by religious faith. Examining more than just the centuries-long clash between faith and reason, Biblical scholar Frederick Carl Eiselen, a voice almost forgotten today, discusses how and why the Old Testament holds its own against modern criticism, contemporary archaeology, and comparative mythology to remain of concrete significance for today's Christians. A brave and insightful work at the turn of the 20th-century, it remains an even braver one at the turn of the 21st. OF INTEREST TO: religious philosophers, students of 20th-century Christianity, readers of culture-war issues American author FREDERICK CARL EISELEN (1872-1937) also wrote Prophecy and the Prophets in Their Historical Relations (1909), Books of the Pentateuch: Their Origin, Contents, and Significance (1916), and Psalms and Other Sacred Writings: Their Origin, Contents, and Significance (1918).

This short story has called forth the highest praise from the most competent critics for its simple beautiful presentation of scenes from the rural life of ancient Israel. It is artistic in the noblest sense, though it is not likely that in those days there was much consciousness of art of discussion as to the technique of story-telling.-from "Ruth: A Woman's Faithfulness and Its Reward"With an emphasis on the Bible as literature, this classic 1922 work examines the stories of the Old Testament with a modern eye, exploring not only their religious and historical significance but their beauty and effectiveness as prose and as examples of the art of storytelling. Among the tales considered are: .The Creation of the World. The First Murder. The Tower of Babel. The Story of Jacob.Samson: or A Strong Man's Failure.Saul and the Witch of Endor. The Story of Job: The Problem of Suffering. The Story of Jonah: A Prophetic Satire.and more.Canadian scholar W. G. JORDAN was professor of Hebrew language and literature at Queen's University, Kingston. He also wrote Biblical Criticism and Modern Thought (1909).

Making The Bible Modern written by Penny Schine Gold and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-18 with History categories.

The Bible has played a critical role in the story of Judaism, modernity, and identity. Penny Schine Gold examines the arena of children's education and the role of the Bible in the reshaping of Jewish identity, especially in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s, when a second generation of Eastern European Jews engaged the task of Americanizing Jewish culture, religion, and institutions. Professional Jewish educators based in the Reform movement undertook a multifaceted agenda for the Bible in America: to modernize it, harmonize it with American values, and move it to the center of the religious school curriculum. Through public schooling, the children of Jewish immigrants brought America home; it was up to the adults to fashion a Judaism that their children could take back out into America. Because of its historic role in the development of Judaism and its cultural significance in American life, Gold finds, the Bible provided Jews with vital links to both the past and the present. The ancient sacred text of the Bible, transformed into highly abridged and amended "Bible tales," was brought into service as a bridge between tradition and modernity.Gold analyzes these American developments with reference to the intellectual history of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe, innovations in public schooling and social theory, Protestant religious education, and later versions of children's Bibles in the United States and Israel. She shows that these seemingly simple children's books are complex markers of the pressing concerns of Jews in the modern world.
