The life story of a Serbian woman over a period of more than 70 years, preserved in memoirs, letters and mostly diaries, recounts the triumphs and tragedies of a life that takes place against the backdrop of extraordinary turbulence in the Balkans. It covers more than half a century, five wars (including the two world wars), and four ideologies. This is a time of excitement in Serbia as its leaders carve an independent state out of the Ottoman Empire and attempt to modernize a largely rural and “backward” corner of Europe. A time of opportunity for many who join in the effort to build the infrastructure of a modern economy, as well as the growing number of middle class families who send their children, in rare cases even girls, to the emerging system of state schools. Above all, a time of war, as the expanding Serbian state comes into conflict with its neighbors and, ultimately, the Great Powers of Europe. Accompanied by an introductory study, Natalija’s diary provides a rich background to understanding the on-going conflict in the Balkans today.

Originally intended as a journal to chronicle the lengthy journey to international adoption, Finding Myself, Finding My Daughter is the sincere and heartwarming memoir of a woman who soon discovers she must find herself before she can adopt a child. In the first pages of her autobiographical tale, author Cheryle Rietmann reflects on her turbulent childhood and a violent first marriage that brought her to the brink of suicide. Eventually, Rietmann finds happiness after marrying Gregg, her second husband and the father of her two sons, but the desperate ache to find the lonely little girl she has envisioned for years finally becomes too much to ignore. Gregg and Cheryle begin the mound of international paperwork that finally leads them to an orphanage in Ukraine and to their beautiful daughter, Ola. By reflecting on her learned lessons of love and perseverance, Rietmann is at last able to recognize and accept the path that led her halfway across the world to an orphanage full of the hopeful faces of children. Finding Myself, Finding My Daughter will become a guide and companion for anyone who has ever searched for themselves and their place in the world, ultimately teaching them that each and everyone of us, in our own small way, can make a difference.

Sheldon Wolin And Democracy written by Lucy Cane and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-12 with Political Science categories.

Lucy Cane presents the first full-length study of Sheldon Wolin (1922–2015), an influential theorist of democracy and prescient critic of "inverted totalitarianism" in the United States. She traces the development of Wolin’s thinking over sixty years, offering an overarching interpretation of his central preoccupations and shifts in perspective. Framed around themes of loss and mourning, this is not only an intellectual biography, but also a critical engagement of Wolin’s work with democratic theory more broadly and an assessment of its value for addressing contemporary crises of democracy. Cane brings Wolin into conversation with other contemporary theorists, from Chantal Mouffe to Edward Said, as well as with his direct intellectual influences. She argues that his mournful tendencies continue to offer unique insight into the potential loss of local democratic cultures in an era of neoliberal precarity. At the same time, she questions whether his politics of mourning can adequately grasp the dynamics of democratic coalition-building or the value of new political movements and ideas. Sheldon Wolin and Democracy remedies a lack of interpretive studies of this key thinker, connects divergent strands of contemporary theory, and addresses urgent democratic dilemmas. It is a must read for all political theorists and others in the academy and beyond who seek to conceptualize the fate of democracy amidst the rise of right-wing populist movements in the twenty-first century.
