Un petit pas pour un homme, un bond de géant pour l’Humanité... et un destin hors du commun pour une montre qui accompagna les premiers pas de l’Homme sur la Lune, devenant ainsi la plus grande icône de l’histoire de l’horlogerie : l’Omega Speedmaster « Moonwatch ». Présentée au public par Omega en 1957, la Speedmaster avait été conçue pour un usage plutôt sportif, comme par exemple la course automobile. Son destin prit toutefois une toute autre tournure au début des années 60. Les astronautes, dont certains portaient une Speedmaster à titre privé, souhaitaient être officiellement équipés d’une montre fiable, précise et résistante. C’est la raison pour laquelle la NASA engagea en 1964 une série de tests rigoureux et en conditions extrêmes, afin de sélectionner le meilleur chronographe pour les accompagner lors de leurs missions spatiales. L’Omega Speedmaster remporta ces tests et fut officiellement certifiée (« Flight Qualified for All Manned Space Missions ») par la NASA le 1er mars 1965 pour le projet Gemini. C’est en juillet 1969 qu’elle entra véritablement dans l’Histoire, au service des astronautes de la mission Apollo 11 (Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin et Michael Collins) pour les premiers pas de l’Homme sur la Lune. Ce livre retrace cette épopée extraordinaire et les évolutions d’une montre unique et intemporelle qui, depuis ses débuts en 1957 jusqu’aux modèles actuels, n’a jamais cessé de fasciner.
