Gravitational wave detection is certainly one of the most challenging goals for today's physics. For three decades detectors have improved in sensitivity in order to confirm the existence of these waves, which are predicted by general relativity and other theories of gravitation. Besides testing these theories themselves the detection of gravitational waves will open a new window to observe the Universe — gravitational astronomy — which will be responsible for a great number of the new discoveries in physics, astrophysics and cosmology, and major technological advances in the next millennium. The last generation of detectors is under study now, and it will probably consist of several antennas sensitive to all directions, forming an “omnidirectional gravitational radiation observatory”. This book is a compilation of the papers presented at a recent workshop for this kind of observatory. It includes original works from some of the most active physicists in the field, both experimentalists and theorists, and the present status of the different detectors around the world.

This volume contains the proceedings of the 12th Italian Conference on General Relativity and Gravitational Physics, held in Rome in September 1996. Following the established pattern, the conference was structured such that there were a number of invited lectures and three workshops in parallel sessions regarding astrophysics, general relativity (both classical and quantum) and experimental and observational gravity.

This text introduces needed theoretical instruments and offers an up-to-date discussion on fundamental physics as well as the experimental tools used and developed for the construction and exploitation of gravitational wave antennae (resonant bars, ground-based and space interferometric detectors). In addition, problems in the fields of optics, signal processing, control and feedback in active mechanical filtering are deeply analyzed, with reference to solutions adopted in the main detectors.

Gravitational waves were predicted by Einstein over 75 years ago. Their detection is one of the great challenges of contemporary experimental physics. This Conference intended to honour Edoardo Amaldi for his role in this research and brought together scientists engaged all over the world in gravitational wave experiments with resonant mass, interferometers and space detectors. The book gives a broad view of the detectors presently in operation and of the new generation of interferometric and resonant mass detectors now being built or under design. The book also contains lectures on neutrino telescopes and γ ray bursts observations, underlying the role of coincidence experiments among different detectors in opening new windows on the Universe.

Léon Rosenfeld (1904-1974) was a remarkable, many-sided physicist of exceptional erudition. He was at the center of modern physics and was well-known as Niels Bohr's close collaborator and spokesman. Besides he reflected deeply on the history and philosophy of science and its social role from a leftist perspective. As both actor and acute spectator of modern physics and as a polyglot cosmopolitan whose life crossed those of many important people in both the East and West, as well as by virtue of his close collaboration and friendship with Bohr, Rosenfeld was an important figure in twentieth century physics. His biography illuminates the development, popularization, and reception of quantum physics and its interpretation in addition to the development of the political Left. The book draws extensively from previously untapped, unpublished sources in more than five languages.

Parallel sessions touch on dark matter, neutrinos, X-ray sources, astrophysical black holes, neutron stars, white dwarfs, binary systems, radiative transfer, accretion disks, quasars, gamma ray bursts, supernovas, alternative gravitational theories, perturbations of collapsed objects, analog models, black hole thermodynamics, numerical relativity, gravitational lensing, large scale structure, observational cosmology, early universe models and cosmic microwave background anisotropies, inhomogeneous cosmology, inflation, global structure, singularities, chaos, Einstein-Maxwell systems, wormholes, exact solutions of Einstein's equations, gravitational waves, gravitational wave detectors and data analysis, precision gravitational measurements, quantum gravity and loop quantum gravity, quantum cosmology, strings and branes, self-gravitating systems, gamma ray astronomy, cosmic rays and the history of general relativity.
