Excerpt from On Aquatic Carnivorous Coleoptera or Dytiscidae Some years ago I commenced a special study of the Dytiscidae, with the Object of increasing the recorded information about this family of beetles. I had been previously, for a considerable period, specially interested in the family, and when beginning my studies, I hoped particularly that I should be able to improve the very imperfect classification in vogue, and I also wished to know whether a detailed knowledge of the varied structural peculiarities of the species would be consistent with the belief that the present condition of these had been reached by a process of gradual modification or evolution, and whether an intimate acquaintance with the intricate relations existing between the diverse components Of the family would render credible the hypothesis that these are descended from a few ancestors or even from a single very remote ancestor. Now that I am Offering to the Royal Dublin Society the work that has occupied me for some years, I feel that I must in the first place make an apology for its imperfections and omissions. I have accomplished but little - so little that, in comparison with what I have left undone, I feel it to be almost as nothing. Our knowledge Of the earlier stages of the life Of Coleoptera, and of their meta morphoses is very imperfect, and in the case Of the aquatic species there are special difficulties in the way of acquiring information of this nature, thus it happens that we know very little of the life histories of the Dytiscidae - so little that it cannot aid at present in the classification of these insects, and I have therefore limited my efforts to producing an arrangement based on the structures of the perfect insect. The 2nd edition of this comprehensive book provides one of the most complete overviews of the aquatic beetles in the family Dytiscidae, also known as predaceous diving beetles. Dytiscids constitute one of the largest families of freshwater insects with approximately 4,650 named species that come in a variety of sizes, colors, and habitat affinities. Although dytiscid adults and larvae are ubiquitous throughout a variety of aquatic habitats, and are important predators on other aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates, there are no compilations that have focused on summarizing the knowledge on aspects of their ecology, systematics, and biology. Chapters in this book summarize hitherto scattered topics, including their anatomy and habitats, chemical and community ecology, phylogenies and larval morphology including chaetotaxy, sexual systems, predation, dispersal, conservation, and cultural and historical aspects. The 2nd edition offers updates on the newest scientific findings on dytiscids and also includes a new chapter on the subterranean fauna from Australia. The information in this new edition is potentially beneficial to anyone working in aquatic systems where dytiscids are an important part of the food web. Moreover, readers will gain a greater appreciation of dytiscids as model organisms for investigations of fundamental principles derived from ecological and evolutionary theory. Contributed chapters are by authors who are actively engaged in studying dytiscids, and each chapter provides color photos and future directions for research.

Introducing chapters provide general information about the state of knowledge and distribution, morphology of adults and larvae, bionomics, collecting and rearing. The main part comprises keys and descriptions for identification of adult beetles, including information on distribution and biology of all species. A catalogue shows provincial records in Fennoscandia and Denmark. The book contains 608 figures and 3 plates. An up-to-date, well illustrated identification manual for the Fennoscandian and Danish Dytiscidae has been wanting for decades. This work is based on the latest advances in synonymy and taxonomy of the family, and on the study of thousands of specimens in collections and field.

It then defines and keys adults & larvae (when known) of dytiscid fauna of Canada, the United States, and for some taxa also northern Mexico. The focus is on the fauna of Canada & Alaska, and adults of the 276 species known from this region are treated in detail. For each Canadian-Alaskan species, the following information is presented: nomenclature & synonymy; selected references; description, including illustrations of taxonomically important characteristics; comments on classification or variation; notes on ecology; and description of the species range, accompanied by a map of collection records. Checklists of the dytiscid fauna of Canada/Alaska are also presented, with the distribution of the species recorded by province/territory and Canadian ecozone. Includes systematic index.

This book is a revised edition of the first of three volumes in the Handbook of Zoology series which treats the systematics and biology of Coleoptera. With over 380,000 described species, Coleoptera are by far the most species-rich order of insects and the largest group of animals of comparable geological age. Moreover, numerous species are tremendously important economically. The beetle volumes meet the demand of modern biologists seeking to answer questions about Coleoptera phylogeny, evolution, and ecology. This first Coleoptera volume covers the suborders Archostemata, Myxophaga and Adephaga, and the basal series of Polyphaga, with information on world distribution, biology, morphology of all life stages, phylogeny and comments on taxonomy.
