Dirt-poor, sensitive as poets, and proud as kings, the Powell family has lived on a Georgia mountaintop for generations. Then, during the 1960's, young Ursula Powell's father convinces the Tiber family, owners everything in nearby Tiberville, to commission a huge iron sculpture of a bear for the town. Decades later the strange sculpture - rejected by the townspeople and left to rust on the Powell farm - symbolizes a family's failure and thwarted dreams. But, unknown to Ursula, it is now worth such a huge fortune that the artist's embittered son, Quentin Ricconni, is coming to reclaim it . . . and to change everything Ursula believes about the past, the choices that break a heart, and the redeeming powers of art and love.

He saw the bear out of the corner of his eye just before it knocked him sprawling in the snow. It came around the east side of the cabin, just a few feet from him, and it came at a run. He had left his rifle and pistol inside. All he had was the knife on his belt and he went for it as the huge grizzly closed in for the kill. He saw the cloudy right eye and knew this was his bear, the one that had maimed him and the one he had blinded. Judging by it's ferocity, it remembered him too and planned to extract its pound of flesh. The bear was on top of him before he could get up, growling and swiping at him with its sharp claws, it's huge mouth gaping and filled with sharp teeth. It bit into his left arm up high and he heard the bone snap as the animal yanked it this way and that. With the knife in his right hand, he stabbed it several times in the side as hard as he could. It only seemed to infuriate the beast more and it gained a new purchase on his lower arm and broke it there, the bones grinding in the powerful jaws. Amos realized suddenly that he was screaming as loud as the bear was growling, The beast got his left shoulder in his big mouth and clamped down. He was wracked with pain and screamed out in a different note, sticking the animal time and again. He suddenly realized that the bear was going to kill him if he could not do something decisive within the next few seconds. With that, he moved the knife hand up and tried to stab it in the head, to get the brain. The point seem to penetrate the hard skull but it did not slow the beast. Feeling the last of his strength ebbing, he flipped the knife in his hand from a stabbing grip to a slashing one and struck the bear in the throat. He was rewarded by a deluge of hot blood that steamed in the freezing air and the animal seemed taken aback. It loosened the grip on his shoulder and stumbled off him, walking wobbly a few feet away, spraying a gusher of blood all the while. Amos was amazed when the animal turned back toward him and stood on his hind legs, reaching up to great height and growling loud. It then fell over on its side in the snow and jerked several times before going still.

In the Pyrenees, contact between man and bear is rare. There are just over twenty brown bears roaming the vast mountain range. But for centuries, bears have loomed large in folklore and tradition, represented in cave paintings and both revered and feared in today’s annual festivals. ‘Bear Mountain’ is a journey into man’s relationship with bears and the hold these animals have on our imaginations. However, bears are not viewed with universal affection. Efforts to replenish the brown bear population have been met with violent protests. Pyrenean farmers, fighting to sustain a traditional way of life long-since rendered uneconomical, view the bears as scapegoats for their troubles. Caught in midst of angry battles as change and modernity sweep through local communities, the bears are decried, victimised and hunted. Set amidst the Pyrenean peaks, ‘Bear Mountain’ is a beautifully written documentary account of the author’s search for an elusive brown bear named Balou. From tracking bears with the Bear Team, witnessing the madcap fetes in the bears’ honour and exploring the history of man and bear, ‘Bear Mountain’ scours the emotional response that bears inspire and takes us close to the heart of our connection to the natural world.

Bear Mountain, once home to Native Americans and early settlers, had evolved by the 20th century into one of the nation’s most outstanding public parks. Threatened by quarrying operations and the relocation of Sing Sing Prison, this integral section of the Hudson Highlands was saved by the combined efforts of local citizens and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission. Graced by a deep, picturesque lake at the foot of the mountain and accessible by riverboat, train, and automobile, Bear Mountain State Park became a playground for New York City residents. Visionary park management enabled the park to expand, encompassing nature exhibits, a zoo, camps, and restaurants. It continues to be a year-round recreation center featuring hiking, boating, swimming, and cross-country skiing.
