In the past twenty years, there have been two major periods of interest in Kantian themes, The first coincided with a general turn away from positivism by analytic philosophers, and resulted in a fruitful interchange between Kant scholars and those who applied Kantian ideas to contemporary philosophical problems. The eight papers in this book are drawn from two conferences that honored Lewis White Beck, an influential Kant scholar. Geyser's work is typical of early twentieth-century German Neo-Scholasticism, as we discern in this excerpt from his 1929 Introduction: "What I find lacking in myself is that I have not been the framer of a great system of philosophy born from the Catholic idea. Despite all my skirmishes with modern philosophy, I have remained fundamentally hooked on Neo-Thomism and I appear sometimes more intent on Neo-Thomistic apologetics than on the construction of a system derived from factual problems themselves. In that respect, it is well-established that I take up so much space in my books with polemics against the views of others that I thereby concede the preeminence of these others. Only systems can overcome systems." As a non-systematic Catholic Aristotelian philosopher, Geyser welcomed dialogue with not only his contemporary fellow Neo-Scholastics, such as Pedro Descoqs, Theodor Droege, Lorenz Fuetscher, Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, Joseph Gredt, Adolf Heuser, Bernhard Jansen, Caspar Nink, Franz Sawicki, Artur Schneider, Franz Maria Sladeczek, and Heinrich Straubinger, who are present here in abundance, but also noteworthy precedessors such as Aquinas, Kant, Hume, and Wolff. In his 1933 Foreword he offers this self-assessment: "I am prepared for criticism. Criticism is a useful thing if it is careful to pursue knowledge impartially. Criticism must be rejected if it presumes to have said something great or if it reproaches a philosopher for a philosophy which just takes part in the fate of all true life, namely, existing within relentless movement and development. Certain and fully known truth is, in philosophical questions of every sort, a star shining very far away."

A new approach for defining causality and such related notions as degree of responsibility, degrees of blame, and causal explanation. Causality plays a central role in the way people structure the world; we constantly seek causal explanations for our observations. But what does it even mean that an event C “actually caused” event E? The problem of defining actual causation goes beyond mere philosophical speculation. For example, in many legal arguments, it is precisely what needs to be established in order to determine responsibility. The philosophy literature has been struggling with the problem of defining causality since Hume. In this book, Joseph Halpern explores actual causality, and such related notions as degree of responsibility, degree of blame, and causal explanation. The goal is to arrive at a definition of causality that matches our natural language usage and is helpful, for example, to a jury deciding a legal case, a programmer looking for the line of code that cause some software to fail, or an economist trying to determine whether austerity caused a subsequent depression. Halpern applies and expands an approach to causality that he and Judea Pearl developed, based on structural equations. He carefully formulates a definition of causality, and building on this, defines degree of responsibility, degree of blame, and causal explanation. He concludes by discussing how these ideas can be applied to such practical problems as accountability and program verification. Technical details are generally confined to the final section of each chapter and can be skipped by non-mathematical readers.

He elaborates a system of rules by which the conversion to memory takes place and presents a number of detailed case studies--in perception, linguistics, art, and even political subjugation--that support these rules. Leyton observes that the mind assigns to any shape a causal history explaining how the shape was formed. We cannot help but perceive a deformed can as a dented can. Moreover, by reducing the study of shape to the study of symmetry, he shows that symmetry is crucial to our everyday cognitive processing. Symmetry is the means by which shape is converted into memory. Perception is usually regarded as the recovery of the spatial layout of the environment. Leyton, however, shows that perception is fundamentally the extraction of time from shape. In doing so, he is able to reduce the several areas of computational vision purely to symmetry principles. Examining grammar in linguistics, he argues that a sentence is psychologically represented as a piece of causal history, an archeological relic disinterred by the listener so that the sentence reveals the past. Again through a detailed analysis of art he shows that what the viewer takes to be the experience of a painting is in fact the extraction of time from the shapes of the painting. Finally he highlights crucial aspects of the mind's attempt to recover time in examples of political subjugation.
