The practice of interpreting texts is complex, and the problem is made worse when texts seem alien to the reader. How can we overcome barriers to understanding? Where do we start, and what must we do? And what is hermeneutics anyway? This beginner's handbook on hermeneutics provides a simple approach to textual interpretation, introducing a method that is holistic and humane, focused on listening and openness. We must take account of our presuppositions, analyze literary and historical-grammatical contexts, and organize our thoughts based on the meanings we discover. And then we must act, verifying or falsifying what we have found. This open content book is an essential guide for students as they interpret texts of all kinds, and is meant as a companion for writing and research. Helpful notes are provided for key concepts, and each step of the process is briefly explained, along with questions for further analysis.

Hermeneutics is an interdisciplinary study of how we interpret texts, especially biblical texts, in the light of theories of understanding in philosophy, meaning in literary theory, and of theology. This volume brings together the seminal thought of a leading contemporary pioneer in this field. Thiselton's The Two Horizons was a classic on how horizons of biblical texts engage creatively with the horizons of the modern world. The author's later New Horizons in Hermeneutics explored still more deeply the transforming capacities of biblical texts, while his massive commentary on 1 Corinthians interpreted an epistle. This volume collects many of Anthony Thiselton's more notable writings from some seven books and 70 articles, to which he adds his own re-appraisals of earlier work. It uniquely expounds the thought of a major contemporary British theologian through his own words, and includes his own critical assessments.

Hermeneutics continues to be an area of interest to many, yet recent discussions in hermeneutic theory have turned toward fringe areas - whether found in realms of post-structuralism or radical orthodoxy - that have resulted in a 'forgetfulness' of one of hermeneutics' key thinkers, Immanuel Kant. This book seeks to reaffirm Kant's place as a central thinker for hermeneutics and to challenge and support prevailing criticisms. It has been argued that Kant merely offers a theory of the subjective universality of a rational aesthetic judgement where only reason connects us to the transcendent and sensation is only a subjective and confusing factor that distracts and distorts reason. This position is challenged as well as supported by the contributors to this book, scholars who bring key issues in hermeneutics to light from American, British, and continental perspectives, grounded in questions and concerns germane to today's culture. The discussion of hermeneutics is framed as being deliberately an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural affair. The Sacred and the Profane provides a welcome addition to contemporary discussions on hermeneutic theory through its assertion that there is still a need to support a critical approach to hermeneutics after Kant.

If the Word of God is our anchor in the chaos of this world, if it is our assurance that we can know the world and God its Creator, we need confidence that we can understand this Word. Reading and applying the Bible is essential to every facet of Christian life and ministry, yet our ability to do so is under attack from a myriad of directions. In Postmodern philosophy, the possibility of communication is dismissed, let alone communication from God. In Biblical studies, the amount of knowledge required to come to firm conclusions concerning the meaning and application of the Bible grows every day. However, the Bible is not so pessimistic about its accessibility. Instead, it presents itself as a clear word, sufficient to guide and encourage Christians in every area of life. Having outlined in Part 1 a method for reading the Bible in order to understand it, The Gift of Reading Part 2 addresses the issues of hermeneutics or the theory of reading. After briefly surveying the major approaches to reading the Bible throughout the history of the Church, The Gift of Reading Part 2 argues for an understanding of the role of the text, read, and author based on a Biblical epistemology and theology.

Since its publication in 1994, An Introduction to Biblical Hermeneutics has become a standard text for a generation of students, pastors, and serious lay readers. This second edition has been substantially updated and expanded, allowing the authors to fine-tune and enrich their discussions on fundamental interpretive topics. In addition, four new chapters have been included that address more recent controversial issues: • The role of biblical theology in interpretation • How to deal with contemporary questions not directly addressed in the Bible • The New Testament’s use of the Old Testament • The role of history in interpretation The book retains the unique aspect of being written by two scholars who hold differing viewpoints on many issues, making for vibrant, thought-provoking dialogue. What they do agree on, however, is the authority of Scripture, the relevance of personal Bible study to life, and why these things matter.

Hans W. Frei’s groundbreaking achievement in theological hermeneutics, Christology, and theological method has made possible new alternatives in contemporary theology, and has become a key impetus to the emergence of postliberal theology also known as the “Yale School.” Much discussion has taken place since the publication of The Eclipse of Biblical Narrative in 1974, and his work continues to generate intense debate among his proponents, critics, and sympathetic observers. One of the key questions in this conversation is whether Frei’s work signals a sectarian flight from the public world at large to a private enclave in the intratextual world of biblical narrative. Unfortunately, his critics have misinterpreted his thought and failed to recognize that the notion of the public is a pivotal feature of his theology. Therefore, the aim of this book is to debunk common misunderstandings of his project by showing that Frei maintains a sustained and robust commitment to the public world. This book demonstrates the public character of Frei’s thought by examining the major foci of his work, theological hermeneutics, Christology, ecclesiology, and theological method. It begins with an introductory chapter on postliberal theology with special attention to the criticism of sectarianism, followed by a study of Frei’s constructive proposals in relation to the church, society, and academy.

"We know that this book works and will take students to a level not often achieved through other beginning textbooks." So say Stanley Porter and his coauthors in the preface to their Fundamentals of New Testament Greek -- an ambitious, comprehensive introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of the Greek New Testament. This first-year Greek textbook discusses all the forms and basic syntax of Koine Greek, complete with extensive paradigms, examples, and explanations. Porter, Reed, and O'Donnell's Fundamentals of New Testament Greek features pedagogically sound and linguistically informed techniques of language instruction. The volume introduces the individual words and grammatical details of Greek, sensitive to their frequency of use in the New Testament, reinforcing for students the elements that they will most often encounter. Grammatical forms, including the less common ones, are analyzed and explained in detail, often with illustrative examples from the Greek New Testament. The authors include complete paradigms and give numerous examples; the vocabulary list includes nearly one thousand words, which are introduced throughout the book's thirty chapters. Students who complete this text will be able to move directly into Greek exegesis courses and more advanced Greek-language courses. Fundamentals of New Testament Greek will prove invaluable for gaining a thorough foundational understanding of New Testament Greek, including full exposure to the formation, accenting, and semantics of its complex verbal system. Read more about the book in a blog post by its editor, Craig Noll, on EerdWord.

No other text on hermeneutics covers the range of writers and subjects discussed in Thiselton’s Hermeneutics.
