"This book investigates the syntactic phenomenon of ellipsis and the linguistic forces that trigger it. It presents the results of a corpus-based study which takes into account grammatical, semantic/discursive, usage-related and processing variables. Evelyn Gandón-Chapela builds upon the few empirical works on ellipsis in Present-day English to offer the first comparative analysis of ellipsis and its development throughout the recent history of the English language. Moreover, the book also provides a complex query algorithm which automatically detects and retrieves cases of ellipsis, leading to successful recall ratios, applicable to a wide range of parsed corpora."--

This collection brings together research on cutting-edge developments at the intersection of language ideology and metalinguistic discourse, showcasing the potential of diverse approaches. With interest in language ideology and metalinguistic discourse growing, numerous qualitative and quantitative approaches have been established but have often resulted in a siloing of methods. Despite methodological advances, research on language ideology and metalinguistic discourse often relies on either qualitative methods (e.g., ethnography, content analysis) or traditional corpus linguistic techniques (e.g., concordance, collocation), with limited overlap between these “camps,” a division which has hindered a comprehensive understanding of the field. The book makes the case for bridging this gap by exploring the overlap between different approaches, demonstrating the nuanced insights a mixed methods perspective can provide. Featuring a wide range of applications across domains such as education, policy, minorities, traditional and social media, popular culture, and literature, the volume highlights the potential of integrating diverse methods. An afterword by Tommaso Milani ties these strands together, offering a forward-looking view of the field and potential directions for further research. This book will appeal to students and scholars in applied linguistics, language and education, and sociolinguistics.

This festschrift volume brings together important contributions by expert syntacticians across the globe on tense and finiteness, adjectives, dative and ergative case, acquisition of case, and other topics both within the domain of Dravidian linguistics and in the broader theoretical understanding of cross-linguistic data. Professor R. Amritavalli, a renowned linguist, has spent over three decades in the fields of syntax and syntactic acquisition, making important and landmark contributions in these areas, and this book is a recognition of her work. The contributors cover these themes in the context of English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi-Urdu, Bangla, Dravidian languages, and understudied languages like Huave. The Discourse Of Teaching Practice Feedback written by Fiona Farr and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-13 with Education categories.
In this book, Farr examines the spoken and written language of post-observation teaching-practice feedback on teacher education programs. To do so, she draws upon theories from discourse analysis, conversation analysis, and pragmatics to frame the analysis of feedback meetings and written tutor reports, which are then examined using comparative quantitative and qualitative corpus-based techniques. The overall aim is to determine the defining characteristics of this genre, focusing especially on pragmatic factors, with the ultimate goal of investigating the salient aspects responsible for making feedback both effective and affective. Farr's research draws upon a spoken corpus of feedback interactions and a written corpus of tutor reports from language teacher education and is also strongly informed by data in the form of diary reflections and questionnaire responses from student teachers and questionnaire responses from the relevant tutors.
