Is mercy more important than justice? Since antiquity, mercy has been regarded as a virtue. Yet by the end of the eighteenth century, mercy had been exiled from political life. In this book, Malcolm Bull analyses and challenges the Enlightenment’s rejection of mercy. Political realism, Bull argues, demands recognition of the foundational role of mercy in society. If we are vulnerable to harm from others, we are in need of their mercy. By restoring the primacy of mercy over justice, we may constrain the powerful and release the agency of the powerless. An important contribution to political philosophy from an inventive thinker, On Mercy makes a persuasive case for returning this neglected virtue to the heart of political thought.

A gripping tale of passion, treachery, betrayal, and grief, yet also a story of hope, faith and love and a merciful God whose ways are not ours. Set in the early years of the twentieth century, when the greatest expectation for a woman’s future was marriage and children, Rose longed to be wanted and loved, but no one seemed to want her. Until the day she has a riding accident and is rescued by success-driven Henry, a childhood friend and someone she secretly admires. For a moment it seems possible they will share a life together and she might have the family she longs for. But just when their friendship is blossoming and Henry proposes to Rose, World War 1 breaks out in Europe and the local men begin to enlist. At first, Henry is spared from going to war because, as a farmer, he’s regarded as an essential food provider. But when he’s given a white feather as a symbol of cowardice, he makes the decision to go, to prove he is an honorable man. Suddenly everything changes for the couple and Rose discovers a conventional life has become even harder to attain for herself than she imagined. Can the future that had been within Rose’s grasp eventuate? Will going to war give Henry the honor he is looking for? Or will Henry’s embittered sister ensure neither is possible? Find out in Book 1 of the Coin Trilogy

Being a Catholic means being merciful, 'the willingness to enter into the chaos of another.' This book explores the seven corporal and seven spiritual works of mercy and considers how we invoke mercy both in the church in the Eucharistic liturgy and in our homes, with family and friends. Interspersed are three meditations on mercy: on September 11, on being a priest in light of the scandal in Boston, on the world of HIV/AIDS.

When Jesus asked us to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, and visit the imprisoned, he didn’t mean it literally, right? Kerry Weber, a modern, young, single woman in New York City sets out to see if she can practice the Corporal Works of Mercy in an authentic, personal, meaningful manner while maintaining a full, robust, regular life. Weber, a lay Catholic, explores the Works of Mercy in the real world, with a gut-level honesty and transparency that people of urban, country, and suburban locales alike can relate to. Mercy in the City is for anyone who is struggling to live in a meaningful, merciful way amid the pressures of “real life.” For those who feel they are already overscheduled and too busy, for those who assume that they are not “religious enough” to practice the Works of Mercy, for those who worry that they are alone in their efforts to live an authentic life, Mercy in the City proves that by living as people for others, we learn to connect as people of faith.

The Triumph Of Mercy written by Mohammed Rustom and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-10 with Religion categories.

Discusses philosopher Mullā Ṣadrā’s commentary on the opening chapter of the Qur’ān. This book investigates the convergence of philosophy, scriptural exegesis, and mysticism in the thought of the celebrated Islamic philosopher Mullā Ṣadrā (d. 1050/1640). Through a careful presentation of the theoretical and practical dimensions of Ṣadrā’s Qur’ānic hermeneutics, Mohammed Rustom highlights the manner in which Ṣadrā offers a penetrating metaphysical commentary upon the Fātiḥa, the chapter of the Qur’ān that occupies central importance in Muslim daily life. Engaging such medieval intellectual giants as Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d. 606/1210) and Ibn ‘Arabī (d. 638/1240) on the one hand, and the wider disciplines of philosophy, theology, Sufism, and Qur’ānic exegesis on the other, Ṣadrā’s commentary upon the Fātiḥa provides him with the opportunity to modify and recast many of his philosophical positions within a scripture-based framework. He thereby reveals himself to be a profound religious thinker who, among other things, argues for the salvation of all human beings in the afterlife. Mohammed Rustom is Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies at Carleton University. He is the coeditor (with Atif Khalil and Kazuyo Murata) of In Search of the Lost Heart: Explorations in Islamic Thought by William C. Chittick, also published by SUNY Press.

Praying To The Goddess written by Mahita Vas and has been published by Monsoon Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-01 with Self-Help categories.

When Mahita was 15, a teacher at her Catholic school in Singapore said she could see the devil in her eyes. While growing up, then raising a family of her own, she constantly fought to understand and control this ‘devil’ inside her. Born to Indian parents in Singapore and raised by a Chinese amah, Mahita Vas struggled to fit into a conservative society where exuberance is frowned upon and conformity is a tradition. She spent a significant part of life feeling different, being different. Throughout her career with Singapore Airlines, then as an advertising industry executive, she led a volatile life – sometimes blissfully and enviably contented, at other times wishing she was dead. No one, least of all Mahita, suspected she was mentally ill ... until the day her sister suggested she had ‘inherited Daddy’s illness’. This epiphanic revelation led to a bipolar disorder diagnosis at age 41, followed by a suicide attempt where she narrowly escaped death. Praying to the Goddess of Mercy charts Mahita’s journey from chaos to stability. It offers insights into an illness for which there is no known cause, no cure and no immunity. It will inspire and enlighten people with mental disorders and the loved ones who suffer with them. Ultimately, it is about being true to oneself and having the courage to take charge in the pursuit of happiness.
