This dissertation offers a theory of a solution to the problem of lost meaning in life due to regrettable, past events. Each of us wishes for a meaningful life, but each of us, too, is vulnerable to threats to the meaning in life. The dissertation argues that a phenomenon called redemption can restore lost meaningfulness, and increase the value of our lives, overall. The first step in the argument is to demonstrate the need for a new model of redemption. The next step is to argue that redemption is a matter of transforming the meaning of events in our lives from bad to good in a thick, eudaimonistic sense related to a person's well-being. Finally, I show that this transformation not only increases a person's well-being but, more importantly, changes the relationship a person has with his past; By satisfying conditions for meaningfulness—a special value a life can have, distinct from its moral goodness or happiness—redemption renders the past more meaningful that it would have otherwise been. Because of this, redemption can solve the problem articulated in the beginning of the dissertation—the problem of lost meaning in life due to bad, past events.

Don’t send your kids off to college without this book, especially if they will be engaged in the sciences or philosophy. The Design of Science, Evolution, the Environment, and Redemption will clarify the differences, scientific basis, and logical foundation for the two most dominating and competing worldviews we have adopted in western society nowadays—namely science and religion. After reading this book, you will be able to better understand, articulate, and defend what you believe and why. As a society in general, we need to understand the basis of our morality and culture, and how science and religion each have a role to play. Just a few of the types of questions answered are: Is there really competition and conflict between science and religion? What is the technological and philosophical scope of science? How does our worldview affect the development of morality and virtue, both individually and collectively? Do we really need to be concerned about global environmental changes? Which type of worldview does the best job of providing answers to the tough questions on origin, purpose, environmental issues, morality, government, and eternity? Is a belief in God and the Bible part of the evolutionary process? Written by a mechanical engineer with more than thirty years of design and R&D experience, The Design of Science, Evolution, the Environment, and Redemption lays out in a clear, concise, easy-to-read, and entertaining manner much of the science, logic, and data used by academia and the media to answer life’s toughest questions as compared to the biblical Judeo-Christian tradition. This book explores how we can measure the truthfulness, accuracy, and scope of these worldviews and how they can affect us personally, spiritually, and culturally. The answers are logically, spiritually, and technically robust, as well as just plain surprising in many ways.

There is only one question which really matters: why do bad things happen to good people?' Out of a faith-shaking and senseless waste of a life comes this remarkable and caring book, which will help many. It has sensible and unorthodox and mind-opening things to say about God - and about ourselves. Its author has wisdom and no bitterness. We can learn from him, about acceptance and guilt and despair and the helplessness we all feel when 'none of it makes sense' when we say 'why them?' or worse 'why us?'. We owe him our thanks' David Kossoff 'Rabbi Kushner writes from a wealth of Jewish wisdom and pastoral devotion, but his theology is, I find, is wholly in keeping with contemporary Christian thought. So far as there is an answer to the conflict between the goodness of God and the bitterness of suffering, this is it' Gerald Priestland 'It will bring new meaning, strength and hope to many' Dame Cicely Saunders, DBE, FRCP

Film And Redemption written by David Rankin and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-22 with Religion categories.

This book explores the representation of the idea or theme of redemption in contemporary, popular film. The discussion focuses primarily on the work of three directors – Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese and Kore-eda Hirokazu – but also considers a few films from other directorial hands. David Rankin divides the notion of personal redemption into transactional and transformational aspects, differentiating between redemption, understood as that which is external to the person but impacting on their being and environment, and that which is internal to the person. Redemption is viewed broadly as a journey from brokenness to wholeness, from imprisonment to release, or from some form of slavery to freedom. Both secular and religious (especially Christian) understandings of the notion are discussed, and consideration is given to how the former might inform the latter.
