Excerpt from On Some Common Errors in Iron Bridge Design It appeared, therefore, that a criticism of existing bridges would be useful not only to the designer of new structures anxious to avoid the defects of the older ones, but also, and perhaps in an even greater degree, to the man who has received a legacy of imperfect structures from his predecessors, which he is desirous of utilizing as far as possible by judicious repairing and local strengthening, for it is to be noted as a good point of many of our defective bridges that they are like chains, most of the links of which are abundantly strong while occasionally a very weak one is found, which governs the strength of the whole and that thus a comparatively inexpensive local reinforcement may improve the whole structure to a very large and valuable extent. I shall now proceed as briefly as is consistent with clearness to point out what I consider to be the principal errors in structures that have come under my notice, and indicate how their defects may be remedied, if remediable, in existing and avoided in future structures. "Telling as much a social, educational, and cultural story as institutional history, this detailed account chronicles the ideological patterns, internal and countrywide conflicts, and student experiences at the University of Melbourne from 1850 to 1939. The daily life of staff, professors, and students are recounted during times of turmoil and peace in Australia, including the depression of the 1890s and World War I. The account offers a window into the pedagogical conflicts and research achievements of one of Australia's oldest continuing educational institutions."

Iron Dominated Electromagnets written by Jack T Tanabe and has been published by World Scientific Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-05-06 with Science categories.

This unique book, written by one of the world's foremost specialists in the field, is devoted to the design of low and medium field electromagnets whose field level and quality (uniformity) are dominated by the pole shape and saturation characteristics of the iron yoke. The wide scope covers material ranging from the physical requirements for typical high performance accelerators, through the mathematical relationships which describe the shape of two-dimensional magnetic fields, to the mechanical fabrication, assembly, installation, and alignment of magnets in a typical accelerator lattice. In addition, stored energy concepts are used to develop magnetic force relationships and expressions for magnets with time varying fields. The material in the book is derived from lecture notes used in a course at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and subsequently expanded for the U.S. Particle Accelerator School, making this text an invaluable reference for students planning to enter the field of high energy physics. Mathematical relationships tying together magnet design and measurement theory are derived from first principles, and chapters are included that describe mechanical design, fabrication, installation, and alignment. Some fabrication and assembly practices are reviewed to ensure personnel and equipment safety and operational reliability of electromagnets and their power supply systems. This additional coverage makes the book an important resource for those already in the particle accelerator business as well as those requiring the design and fabrication of low and medium field level magnets for charged particle beam transport in ion implantation and medical applications.
