In a book that highlights the existence and diversity of Amish communities in New York State, Karen M. Johnson-Weiner draws on twenty-five years of observation, participation, interviews, and archival research to emphasize the contribution of the Amish to the state's rich cultural heritage. While the Amish settlements in Pennsylvania and Ohio are internationally known, the Amish population in New York, the result of internal migration from those more established settlements, is more fragmentary and less visible to all but their nearest non-Amish neighbors. All of the Amish currently living in New York are post-World War II migrants from points to the south and west. Many came seeking cheap land, others as a result of schism in their home communities. The Old Order Amish of New York are relative newcomers who, while representing an old or plain way of life, are bringing change to the state. This compelling history is drawn from the papers of the Crouse-Eikle family, discovered in their ancestral home in Crousetown on Nova Scotia’s South Shore. Millwright John Will Crouse (1844–1914) kept a meticulous diary spanning five decades. Reflective by nature, he recorded the challenges of work, pondered the intricacies of communal life, and wrote movingly of his personal and spiritual struggles. His daughter Elvira Crouse Eikle reported on village events for local newspapers, and her son, Harold Eikle (1912–1977), a gifted teacher and musician, wrote letters and family history. How the utopian tradition offers answers to today’s environmental crises In the face of Earth’s environmental breakdown, it is clear that technological innovation alone won’t save our planet. A more radical approach is required, one that involves profound changes in individual and collective behavior. Utopianism for a Dying Planet examines the ways the expansive history of utopian thought, from its origins in ancient Sparta and ideas of the Golden Age through to today's thinkers, can offer moral and imaginative guidance in the face of catastrophe. The utopian tradition, which has been critical of conspicuous consumption and luxurious indulgence, might light a path to a society that emphasizes equality, sociability, and sustainability. Gregory Claeys unfolds his argument through a wide-ranging consideration of utopian literature, social theory, and intentional communities. He defends a realist definition of utopia, focusing on ideas of sociability and belonging as central to utopian narratives. He surveys the development of these themes during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries before examining twentieth- and twenty-first-century debates about alternatives to consumerism. Claeys contends that the current global warming limit of 1.5C (2.7F) will result in cataclysm if there is no further reduction in the cap. In response, he offers a radical Green New Deal program, which combines ideas from the theory of sociability with proposals to withdraw from fossil fuels and cease reliance on unsustainable commodities. Yellow Bear was drawn in this direction, so he kept walking (and climbing, and crawling). Suddenly, Yellow Bear popped out into an open meadow. This was the place he had been drawn to. A nice meadow full of wildflowers and singing birds. Yellow Bear was about to sit down and relax and enjoy this meadow, taking in all its majestic beauty; when the Wind came to play with him, flipping his ear forward. Come, play with me! it said. Yellow Bear knew the Wind. He knew how nice it was. The Wind brought smells to his nose of honey, berries, and other foods. The Wind told him where other animals were. The Wind could keep him warm, or cool him off. The Wind brought him music as it sang through the leaves of the trees. Yes, the Wind was nice. But, this was the first time the Wind had invited him to play. Yellow Bear loved to play, oh how he loved to play! The Wind had tagged him, so now Yellow Bear ran to tag the Wind. The Wind was elusive, and the first few times, Yellow Bear missed. Yellow Bear would chase the Wind, and just as he was about to tag it, the Wind would disappear. Then the Wind would appear someplace else and Yellow Bear would chase it again. And, again the Wind would disappear just as Yellow Bear was about to tag it.
