In the heart of the Alaskan wilderness lies a remote island, a place of breathtaking beauty and harsh realities. It is here that a young woman leaves behind the bustling city life of the East Coast in search of a new beginning. Drawn to the island's wild beauty and the promise of a simpler life, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and resilience. She learns the hard work of commercial fishing, the thrill of catching a salmon, and the satisfaction of providing food for her family and community. But she also learns the importance of self-reliance, the power of community, and the resilience of the human spirit. This memoir is a testament to the transformative power of wilderness living. It is a story of finding solace and renewal in the natural world, of embracing the challenges of life, and of discovering the strength within oneself. With vivid prose and a keen eye for detail, the author brings to life the beauty and the harshness of the Alaskan wilderness. She paints a portrait of a community bound together by shared experiences and a deep connection to the land and the sea. And she tells a story of personal growth and resilience that will inspire readers to seek out their own adventures and to find their own place in the world. This book is a must-read for anyone who loves the outdoors, who is drawn to the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness, or who is simply looking for a story of hope and resilience. God At The Edge written by Niles Goldstein and has been published by Harmony this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-03-10 with Religion categories.

Here is a book about adventure, raw experience, and facing inner demons. Niles Elliot Goldstein is a young rabbi who sets out to find God in tough and often scary situations: dogsledding above the Arctic Circle, taking the Silk Road into Central Asia without a visa, being chased by a grizzly bear, cruising with DEA agents through the South Bronx, and spending a night in jail in New York City's Tombs. He explores the connections between struggle and growth, fear and transcendence, and uncertainty and faith, seeking the boundary where the finite meets the Infinite. Goldstein is not alone in making this kind of pilgrimage. There has always been a strong tradition of seekers who looked for revelation outside conventional religious settings and encountered God in moments of anguish, terror, and pain. Goldstein juxtaposes his own experiences with those of some of the great historical figures of Judaism and Christianity—Jonah and St. John of the Cross, Moses Maimonides and Julian of Norwich, Nachman of Bratslav and Martin Luther—as well as lesser known mystics and preachers, and he discovers, as they did, that it can sometimes take a journey to the edge to recognize God's presence in our lives.

Because It Is So Beautiful written by Robert Leonard Reid and has been published by Catapult this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-01 with Nature categories.

A Finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein–Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay Yes, every inch of the globe has been seen, mapped, photographed, and measured, but is it known? Robert Leonard Reid doesn’t think so. To draw a circle and calculate its diameter is not to know the circle. In this collection, Reid distinguishes himself from many science–based nature writers, using the natural world as a springboard for speculations and musings on the numinous and the sacred, injustice, homelessness, the treatment of Native Peoples in the United States, and what pushes mountaineers to climb. Ranging in their settings from eastern New Mexico to northern Alaska, Reid’s essays illustrate his belief that the American West is worth celebrating and caring for. Taking its title from an affecting speech given by renowned author Barry Lopez, Because It Is So Beautiful is a response to desperate questions surrounding America’s wildlands. Lopez’s words resonated with the young mountaineer–musician–mathematician Robert Leonard Reid, who was struggling to understand his relationship to the world, to find his vision as a writer. What he learned on that long–ago evening is knit throughout the nineteen pieces in the collection, which include essays from Reid’s previous books Arctic Circle, Mountains of the Great Blue Dream, and America, New Mexico; three essays that appear here in print for the first time; as well as revised and expanded versions of essays that appeared in Touchstone, The Progressive, and elsewhere.

From the azure waters of Hawaii to the pristine streams in Alaska to the craggy New England coast, a devoted angler reveals the agony and ectasy of fishing. Fishing the Wild Waters invites us to traverse America and visit three distant and distinct dream destinations for any serious angler—and anyone who aspires to someday become one. Sullivan's marvelous debut illuminates the often profound nature of fishing as a vehicle that connects those who practice it with reverence to a world beyond the one humans created. As we travel along with Sullivan, he reveals what goes into the pursuit of select fish in the region with humor and personal stories as well as deep knowledge. Hawaii, Alaska and New England are some of the last frontiers of fishing in America. They are full of danger, big fish, and extraordinary adventure. To fish these places is to reach back and stand alongside the First Nations of fishermen—our ancestors who lived there for thousands of years before us—as well as those early Americans who built this country using species like cod as their currency. These cultural and fishing outposts will tell us something if we can just be quiet and listen. To hear that message requires an intrinsic respect for these ancient fishing grounds and our connection to them. This mindset is in lock-step with a growing movement of anglers who fish these wildest of waters as a way to turn down the noise of modern living and tune into their fundamental, hands-on relationship with the sea, finding not only the solace, but the sustenance the fish provides to those who take the time to learn its lessons. Plus, filling a freezer with the world’s healthiest protein just feels right. By turns funny, thrilling, and lyric, Fishing the Wild Waters celebrates the these special places where each fisherman can pull back the curtain, connect to the sea, and gaze into their own soul – the soul of a fisherman.
