This proceedings volume contains the papers of the scientific program of the IFIP Working Group 8.I working conference on Situational Method Engineering: Fundamentals and Experiences. The conference has been held from 12 to 14 September 2007 at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Since the early 1980s, the IFIP WG8.1 working conferences have provided a forum for the presentation and exchange ofresearch results and practical experiences within the field of information systems development methods. After two successful Method Engineering conferences in Atlanta in 1996 and in Kanazawa in 2002, it is now time again to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas in and give a state of the art overview in Method Engineering. The conference programme features three invited keynote presentations, paper presentations and one interactive panel session. Besides, tutorials have been arranged to learn about the basics of Method Engineering. The format of a working conference allows for extensive paper discussions featured by discussant reviews in plenary sessions. Over the last decade Method Engineering, defined as the engineering discipline to design, construct and adapt methods, including supportive tools, has emerged as the research and application area for using methods for systems development.

Abstract: "Given the plethora of methods for information systems development and the fact that no one method is equally suitable for every type of application domain, various proposals have been made to allow for the adaption (tailoring) of methods to better suit the needs of a specific application domain. Among these proposals is the idea of method engineering, which can be defined as the engineering discipline concerned with the design, construction and adaptation of methods, techniques and tools for (information) systems development. Within this field of study, situational method engineering is concerned with the tuning of methods and techniques to the specific characteristics of a certain project. This paper does not address the benefits of situational method engineering, as they are evident, but focuses on the feasibility of this concept. The prerequisites that have to be fulfilled for situational method engineering to be successful are identified and their inherent complexity is investigated."

To deal with the flexible architectures and evolving functionalities of complex modern systems, the agent metaphor and agent-based computing are often the most appropriate software design approach. As a result, a broad range of special-purpose design processes has been developed in the last several years to tackle the challenges of these specific application domains. In this context, in early 2012 the IEEE-FIPA Design Process Documentation Template SC0097B was defined, which facilitates the representation of design processes and method fragments through the use of standardized templates, thus supporting the creation of easily sharable repositories and facilitating the composition of new design processes. Following this standardization approach, this book gathers the documentations of some of the best-known agent-oriented design processes. After an introductory section, describing the goal of the book and the existing IEEE FIPA standard for design process documentation, thirteen processes (including the widely known Open UP, the de facto standard in object-oriented software engineering) are documented by their original creators or other well-known scientists working in the field. As a result, this is the first work to adopt a standard, unified descriptive approach for documenting different processes, making it much easier to study the individual processes, to rigorously compare them, and to apply them in industrial projects. While there are a few books on the market describing the individual agent-oriented design processes, none of them presents all the processes, let alone in the same format.
