The fact that I have the opportunity to present a second edition of this monograph is an indicator for the growing size of the community concerned with agent-based computational economics. The rapid developments in this field make it very difficult to keep a volume like this, which is partly devoted to surveying the literature, up to date. I have done my best to incorporate the relevant new developments in this revised edition but it is in the nature of such a work that the selection of material covered is biased by the authors personal interest and his informational constraints. My apologies go to all researchers in this field whose work is not or not adequately represented in this book. Besides the correction of some errors and typos several additions have been made. In the literature survey sections 2.4 (which was also reorganized) and 3.5 new material was added. I have also added a new section in chapter 3 which deals with the question how well empirically observed phenomena can be explained by GA simulations. A new section in chapter 6 presents a rather extensive analysis of the behavior of a two population GA in the framework of a sealed bid double auction market. Further minor additions and changes were made throughout the text.

Adaptive learning under constant-gain allows persistent deviations of beliefs from equilibrium so as to more realistically reflect agents' attempt of tracking the continuous evolution of the economy. A characterization of these beliefs is therefore paramount to a proper understanding of the role of expectations in the determination of macroeconomic outcomes. In this paper we propose a simple approximation of the first two moments (mean and variance) of the asymptotic distribution of learning estimates for a general class of dynamic macroeconomic models under constant-gain learning. Our approximation provides renewed convergence conditions that depend on the learning gain and the model's structural parameters. We validate the accuracy of our approximation with numerical simulations of a Cobweb model, a standard New-Keynesian model, and a model including a lagged endogenous variable. The relevance of our results is further evidenced by an analysis of learning stability and the effects of alternative specifications of interest rate policy rules on the distribution of agents' beliefs.

This study seeks to construct a basic reinforcement learning-based AI-macroeconomic simulator. We use a deep RL (DRL) approach (DDPG) in an RBC macroeconomic model. We set up two learning scenarios, one of which is deterministic without the technological shock and the other is stochastic. The objective of the deterministic environment is to compare the learning agent's behavior to a deterministic steady-state scenario. We demonstrate that in both deterministic and stochastic scenarios, the agent's choices are close to their optimal value. We also present cases of unstable learning behaviours. This AI-macro model may be enhanced in future research by adding additional variables or sectors to the model or by incorporating different DRL algorithms.
