This book develops and illustrates a comprehensive, multi-level framework for the evaluation of industrial research and development (R&D) activities and the measurement of their performance. The framework encompasses a set of hierarchical, interrelated levels at which R&D evaluation and performance measurement could be undertaken. This enlightening book focuses on the single industrial firm to study performance measurement of R&D functions, projects and individual researchers or engineers. It also addresses R&D evaluation from the point of view of financial markets, with a focus on the relationship between R&D investments and the value of the traded firm. The book broadens tin scope to study the role of technology platforms as R&D coordination mechanisms and also looks at the evaluation of R&D policies. This book will be warmly welcomed by researchers and postgraduate students in disciplines concerned with innovation management, technology policy, and finance who wish to gain an updated overview of R&D evaluation and performance measurement as well as exploring different units of analysis.

Excerpt from On the Measurement of Business Performance in Strategy Research: A Comparison of Approaches The measurement approach denoted as (d) is similar to (b), with a focus on both financial and operational indicators, but the difference is that data are obtained from primary sources. The studies by Bourgeois (1980) and Gupta and Govindarajan which collected perceptual primary data on both financial and operational indicators of performance exemplify this approach. Woo and Willard's (1983) use of the pims data base to explicate the underlying dimensions of performance is another good illustration of this approach. Managers are increasingly concerned with the typical methods available for organizational performance measurement and control. Research into performance measurement, within the field of innovation management, has been variously approached through frameworks for performance measurement in general (for example, the Balanced Scorecard by Norton and Kaplan), R&D performance management, and surveys on in-use Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). It is striking, however, that almost no research has focused explicitly on the performance measurement of research activities, or indeed tried to develop a systematic approach to setting KPIs for specific research goals. This work, in co-operation with ABB Research, Deutsche Telekom AG Laboratories, EMC2 Advanced Technology Solutions, IBM Research, Intel Research, Microsoft Research, Philips Research, and SAP Research, develops a systematic approach to performance measurement for industrial research organizations in innovation-driven companies. The following questions are addressed: (1) Which research goals do research departments have? (2) Which KPIs do they use to monitor the achievement of these goals? (3) Is there a systematic best-practice approach to selecting KPIs for performance goals? The outcome is a complete set of eleven performance clusters, such as the transfer of research results to the development or other organizational departments, and each cluster has its own set of KPIs. The eleven clusters are: Technology Transfer, Future Business Opportunities, Technical Achievements, Intellectual Property, Operational Excellence, Talent Pool, Image, Publications, Presence in Scientific Community, Collaboration with Academia, Collaboration with Partners and Customers. This work led to the creation of the Institute for Industrial Research Performance Management that provides ongoing research and insights for managers of industrial research organizations.

Measuring Service Performance written by Ralf Lisch and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-06 with Business & Economics categories.

In service societies, the tertiary sector has long become the primary sector in terms of GDP and employment. Quality research and testing means better service, and success in the service industries demands quality. Nonetheless, complaints about insufficient, inconsistent or bad service abound. Quality decides on success and failure. Where so much is at stake, management decisions call for systematic research and consumers look for relevant results that provide guidance in complex markets. Research into quality and customer satisfaction gets to the core of a business. However, many so-called studies hardly meet essential criteria of empirical research and deliver artefacts rather than facts. This book puts an end to common misconceptions of quality studies. Measuring Service Performance is an appeal for an approach to quality research that meets quality criteria itself. It is a compelling argument against widespread but rather dubious dealings with measurement, data and statistics. Ralf Lisch calls for a reconsideration of the research process, focussing on content instead of method and adding meaning to results. Because service excellence deserves research excellence. Written in a practical, accessible style, the book offers practitioners as well as market researchers, MBA students and others involved in the service sector a critical analysis and discussion of the essentials of 'Practical Research for Better Quality'.

Given our rapidly changing world, companies are virtually forced to engage in continuous performance monitoring. Though Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) may at times seem to be the real driving force behind social systems, economies and organizations, they can also have far-reaching normative effects, which can modify organizational behavior and influence key decisions – even to the point that organizations themselves tend to become what they measure! Selecting the right performance indicators is hardly a simple undertaking. This book describes in detail the main characteristics of performance measurement systems and summarizes practical methods for defining KPIs, combining theoretical and practical aspects. These descriptions are supported by a wealth of practical examples. The book is intended for all academics, professionals and consultants involved in the analysis and management of KPIs.

Excerpt from On the Measurement of Business Performance in Strategy Research: A Comparison of Approaches A two - dimensional classificatory scheme highlighting ten different approaches to the measurement of business performance In strategy research is developed. The first dimension concerns the use of financial versus broader operational criteria, while the second focuses on two alternate data sources, i.e., primary versus secondary. The scheme permits the classification of an exhaustive coverage of measurement approaches and is useful for discussing their relative merits and demerits. Implications for operationalizing business performance In future strategy research are discussed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
