Socrates, the philosopher who transformed Western thought, remains an enigmatic and fascinating figure. This book is a journey through his life, methods, and the legacy he left in the history of philosophy. Through his dialogues, Socrates taught that true knowledge is born from questioning and that virtue is inseparable from wisdom. His methods, such as the Socratic method and irony, revolutionized our understanding of truth and morality. The book explores not only his biography and trial but also his influence on Plato, Aristotle, and philosophy throughout history, even into the present day. From his resistance to injustice to his unwavering stance before death, Socrates embodies intellectual integrity at its highest level. This reading not only delves into his ideas but invites the reader to apply them in their own life.

A history of “priming” research that analyzes the field’s underlying assumptions and experimental protocols to shed new light on a contemporary crisis in social psychology. In 2012, a team of Belgian scientists reported that they had been unable to replicate a canonical experiment in the field of psychology known as “priming.” The original experiment, performed by John Bargh in the nineties, had purported to show that words connoting old age unconsciously influenced—or primed—research subjects, causing them to walk more slowly. When subsequent researchers could not replicate these results, Nobel-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman warned of a “train wreck looming” if Bargh and his colleagues could not address doubts about their work. Since then, the inability to replicate other well-known priming experiments has helped precipitate an ongoing debate over what has gone wrong in psychology, raising fundamental questions about the soundness of research practices in the field. Anatomy of a Train Wreck offers the first detailed history of priming research from its origins in the early 1980s to its recent collapse. Ruth Leys places priming experiments in the context of contemporaneous debates over not only the nature of automaticity but also the very foundations of social psychology. While these latest discussions about priming have largely focused on methodology—including sloppy experimental practices, inadequate statistical methods, and publication bias—Leys offers a genealogy of the theoretical expectations and scientific paradigms that have guided and motivated priming research itself. Examining scientists’ intellectual strategies, their responses to criticism, and their assumptions about the nature of subjectivity, Anatomy of a Train Wreck raises crucial questions about the evidence surrounding unconscious influence and probes the larger stakes of the replication crisis: psychology’s status as a science.

Wilfrid Sellars And The Foundations Of Normativity written by Peter Olen and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-13 with Philosophy categories.
While Wilfrid Sellars’ philosophy is often depicted in an ahistorical fashion, this book explores the consequences of placing his work in its historical context. In order to show how Sellars’ early publications depend on contextual factors, Peter Olen reconstructs the conceptions of language, psychological, and social explanation that dominated American philosophy in the early 20th century. Because of Sellars’ differing explanations of language and behaviour, Olen argues that many of Sellars’ early commitments are incompatible with his later works. In the course of doing so, Olen highlights problematic tensions between Sellars’ early and later conceptions of language, meta-philosophy, and normativity. Supplementing the main text is a collection of previously unpublished archival material from Wilfrid Sellars, Gustav Bergmann, Everett Hall, and other early 20th century philosophers. This text will be a useful resource to those with an interest in the history of American philosophy, the history of analytic philosophy, Wilfrid Sellars’ philosophy, and the myriad issues surrounding normativity and language.

Markets Deliberation And Environment written by John O'Neill and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-11 with Business & Economics categories.
What is the source of our environmental problems? Why is there in modern societies a persistent tendency to environmental damage? From within neoclassical economic theory there is a straightforward answer to those questions: it is because environmental goods and harms are unpriced. They come free. This position runs up against a view which runs in entirely the opposite direction, that our environmental problems have their source not in a failure to apply market norms rigorously enough, but in the very spread of these market mechanisms and norms. The source of environmental problems lies in part in the spread of markets both in real geographical terms across the globe and through the introduction of markets mechanisms and norms into spheres of life that previously have been protected from markets. In this book, John O’Neill conducts a thorough examination of these two opposing viewpoints covering a discussion of the ethical boundaries of markets, the role of private property rights in environmental protection, the nature of sustainability and the valuation of goods over time. This book is essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying courses in ecological and environmental economics.

Mind Over Matter How Spirituality Changes Lives written by and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-02-27 with Philosophy categories.
Mind over Matter is an interdisciplinary collection of essays exploring how spirituality changes lives in a variety of ways. Unlike much philosophically rooted literature on spirituality, it encourages an understanding of what can be achieved through faith, belief, and self-confidence, without reliance on specific (or, necessarily, any) religious doctrines or views. From theistic, non-theistic, or atheistic perspectives each chapter addresses a distinctive phenomenon, for example, spirituality and healing, spirituality and art, spirituality and running, and spirituality as a response to disaster. Not only do they integrate the results of scientific research and other intellectual investigations to illuminate accomplishments, and sometimes possible sources of failure, but they are also written by academics with practical experience in relevant areas, or at least informed by ideas of practitioners.
