This compelling book on health, wellbeing, and fulfilment investigates the scientific basis of what we think we know about healthy living. How much do we actually know about the information that is presented as fact by health crusaders and in the media? How do perceptions of truth and validity influence our behaviour and our health? Guided by the author’s practice in academic and non-profit medicine, this book highlights the practical impact of scientific studies in a broad range of disciplines and brings to life their relevance and limitations. It presents a journey of discovery that includes the foundations of knowledge, factors of health, implications of lifestyle choices, positive psychology, and social science. The book takes a realistic look at the evidence of biological, psychological, and cultural determinants of health, and is essential reading for anyone who wonders why there is so much left to learn about what truly enhances wellbeing and survival. It is an empowering book that provides a key to understanding how we can all improve and support our health to thrive in any phase of life. We all want to be happy, although 'happiness' can mean very different things to different people. But what if I don't feel happy? Is my life less worthwhile? And is there such a thing as lasting happiness anyway?Western society places great emphasis on the pursuit of health, wealth and pleasure, with a general expectation that having these in abundance will lead directly to The Good Life. But anxiety, depression and loneliness are rife in our communities, and it is common for people to struggle with relationships, and to feel they have a low sense of meaning and lasting fulfilment. Is there a better way for us to try to live?Andrew Parnham believes that there is, but such a way may take us in unexpected directions. In Lasting Happiness he invites us to explore this path in his company, looking beyond our immediate perceptions to consider our universal longings, the extraordinary way in which our brains engage with the world and ourselves, how healthy relationships develop and can be restored, and how meaning and fulfilment may actually be attained.

Living with the Stars tells the fascinating story of what truly makes the human body. The body that is with us all our lives is always changing. We are quite literally not who we were years, weeks, or even days ago: our cells die and are replaced by new ones at an astonishing pace. The entire body continually rebuilds itself, time and again, using the food and water that flow through us as fuel and as construction material. What persists over time is not fixed but merely a pattern in flux. We rebuild using elements captured from our surroundings, and are thereby connected to animals and plants around us, and to the bacteria within us that help digest them, and to geological processes such as continental drift and volcanism here on Earth. We are also intimately linked to the Sun's nuclear furnace and to the solar wind, to collisions with asteroids and to the cycles of the birth of stars and their deaths in cataclysmic supernovae, and ultimately to the beginning of the universe. Our bodies are made of the burned out embers of stars that were released into the galaxy in massive explosions billions of years ago, mixed with atoms that formed only recently as ultrafast rays slammed into Earth's atmosphere. All of that is not just remote history but part of us now: our human body is inseparable from nature all around us and intertwined with the history of the universe.

Leadership Coaching Mentoring Counselling Or Supervision One Way Is Not Enough written by Eileen Piggot-Irvine and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-29 with Business & Economics categories.

This book outlines a highly practical integrated approach to leader support which has been widely utilised across multiple sectors. In addition to outlining the varied modalities of one-to-one support (counselling, supervision, coaching and mentoring), it challenges the notion that such approaches alone can provide the individual with the confidential support which leaders need. Instead, the book offers an action research based ‘Leadership Inquiry Support’ (LIS) model which holistically integrates multiple modalities of support alongside a strong developmental process. Central to this model is dedication to authentic collaboration in the support relationship. Detail is also provided on how to create such a relationship in non-controlling, non-avoiding, dialogical ways. Furthermore, this text explores a number of tricky issues, including how those facilitating LIS gain support for themselves and keep themselves safe, the evaluation of LIS, and consideration of ethical, cultural and context variables. This is not a ‘quick-fix’ solution book, but rather a deep and holistic exploration of implementation strategies for LIS backed up by research and real-world, practical experience.

Perspectives On Marital Dissolution written by Sharon Ee Ling Quah and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-08 with Social Science categories.

This book presents a sociological account on marital dissolution that engages and extends theorisations on individualisation and the contemporary organisation of personal relationships to discuss how the experience of divorce might not be all debilitating but on the contrary, could provide opportunities for productivity, self-responsibility and relationship formation. Using Singaporean divorcees’ narrative accounts, the book explores how divorcees shape and construct what the author refers to as, a divorce biography, to end their unsatisfying marriages, cope with the crisis, negotiate the associated risks, organise post-divorce personal communities and make future plans. It uncovers how divorcees navigate their divorce biographies within the economic, policy and social context they are located in and examines the conditions that facilitate or hinder the pursuit of productivity in different facets of their post-divorce lives. Far from a standard story of divorce, this book presents the diversity and complexity of Singaporean divorce biographies. The research challenges negative discourses associated with divorce and offers a more nuanced perspective by discussing both the precarious and productive aspects of the experience. More importantly, it provides a critical discussion on the limited definition of family prevalent in Singaporean society, and shows how post-divorce family life and practices continue to thrive despite the rupture of marriage.
