Excerpt from An Analysis of Entry and Persistence Among Scientists in an Emerging Field This paper examines the factors that influence scientists in their choice and persistence in an area of research, and compares the experience of scientists who enter a field early with those scientists who follow in their footsteps once the field becomes widely accepted. Evidence is presented from an international survey of more than seven-hundred scientists working in the field of neural networks. After controlling for cohort and experience effects, the results suggest that early entrants as a group are indeed different in both their motivations to enter and their persistence to remain in the field. In general, compared with scientists who enter late, early entrants are significantly less influenced by the social dynamics of the research community. Excerpt from Survival in the Network: On the Persistence of Research Organizations in an Emerging Field Hi: The likelihood of persistence in the development of a technology increases when the focal organization belongs to an interconnected clique of collaborating organizations in the community. It is obvious, though, that the position of a research organization in a collaborative r8 d network is a multidimensional concept. Based on sociometric theory (e.g. Burt, 1992; Freeman, 1977 and 1979; Knoke and Kuklinski, 1983) several indicators of the position of an organization in its collaborative network can be operationalized. The first indicator is the size of the network to which an individual organization belongs. As the number of organizations collaborating with a focal organization increases, its exposure to diverse sources of 'tacit' knowledge increases (cohen and Levinthal, Access to multiple knowledge sources may in turn have a positive effect on the persistence of the organization to continue its efforts in the field. H2: The number of organizations with which a focal organization directly interacts will have a positive effect on its contribution-span. Network size alone does not yet capture the intensity of collaboration among directly interconnected organizations. If ego's network consists of N organiza tions, then the maximum number of possible linkages among the N actors is n(n if the network is symmetrical. Burt's proportional density indicator (1991) re ects the number of contact pairs the focal organization is involved in divided by the maximum number of contact dyads the organization could be in volved in, given the size of its network. Proportional density can now be linked to knowledge diversity. The more the proportional density in ego's network ap proaches its maximum value of 1, the more homogenous we assume the knowledge sources represented by the various actors in the network to be. Homogeneity has the advantage of introducing focus in the research agendas by the members of the network, but it has the potential disadvantage of reducing the variety of problem-solving approaches pursued by the network actors. Therefore, as a corollary to hypothesis 2, the influence of network homogeneity on organizational contribution-spans warrants further exploratory attention. Excerpt from The Role of Students in Pioneering New Fields of Science and Technology: December 1991 A recent international survey of more than seven-hundred scientists working on the development of neural networks provides evidence that pioneering scientists are different in both their motivations to enter and their persistence to remain in the field.1 Pioneers are defined as those scientists who initiate and continue working in a field before it is widely recognized as significant, or perhaps even legitimate by their peers. In comparison to Other scientists, pioneers are more deeply influenced by the intrinsic intellectual appeal of the subject matter and are less influenced by the social dynamics of the research community. This conclusion holds when controlling for a scientist's age and years of professional experience. The results lend support to the contention that scientists' problem choices are determined by cognitive factors that are internal to science, while at the same time show the relevance of social factors operating broadly within a research community. Hence, pioneers may be an important factor to consider when sorting-out the long-standing debate over problem choice in science (for example, see Zuckerman, 1978; Gieryn, 1978; Ziman. Not only are the underlying processes complex and inter-related. But they are in a sense unobservable; there is a chicken and egg quality to the tpdp issue. Confounding the problem is the fact that research goals of related studies are slightly different, so that even if a well catalogued set of innovation types were developed, cumulation of results would still be difficult due to the fragmentation of studies and to the inherent uniqueness in scientific projects. Allen [1984] suggests in science and technology, each piece of work is, by definition, unique. If the problem has been solved before, it is no longer research. The term "disruptive technology" describes a technology that results in a sudden change affecting already established technologies or markets. Disruptive technologies cause one or more discontinuities in the normal evolutionary life cycle of technology. This may lead to an unexpected destabilization of an older technology order and an opportunity for new competitors to displace incumbents. Frequently cited examples include digital photography and desktop publishing. The first report of the series, Persistent Forecasting of Disruptive Technologies, discussed how technology forecasts were historically made, assessed various existing forecasting systems, and identified desirable attributes of a next-generation persistent long-term forecasting system for disruptive technologies. This second book attempts to sketch out high-level forecasting system designs. In addition, the book provides further evaluation of the system attributes defined in the first report, and evidence of the feasibility of creating a system with those attributes. Together, the reports are intended to help the Department of Defense and the intelligence community identify and develop a forecasting system that will assist in detecting and tracking global technology trends, producing persistent long-term forecasts of disruptive technologies, and characterizing their potential impact on future U.S. warfighting and homeland defense capabilities.
