A convex function f may be called sublinear in the following sense; if a linear function l is ::=: j at the boundary points of an interval, then l:> j in the interior of that interval also. If we replace the terms interval and linear junction by the terms domain and harmonic function, we obtain a statement which expresses the characteristic property of subharmonic functions of two or more variables. This ge neralization, formulated and developed by F. RIEsz, immediately at tracted the attention of many mathematicians, both on account of its intrinsic interest and on account of the wide range of its applications. If f (z) is an analytic function of the complex variable z = x + i y. then If (z) I is subharmonic. The potential of a negative mass-distribu tion is subharmonic. In differential geometry, surfaces of negative curvature and minimal surfaces can be characterized in terms of sub harmonic functions. The idea of a subharmonic function leads to significant applications and interpretations in the fields just referred to, and· conversely, every one of these fields is an apparently in exhaustible source of new theorems on subharmonic functions, either by analogy or by direct implication.

Reshetnyak S Theory Of Subharmonic Metrics written by François Fillastre and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-20 with Mathematics categories.

Despite the fundamental role played by Reshetnyak's work in the theory of surfaces of bounded integral curvature, the proofs of his results were only available in his original articles, written in Russian and often hard to find. This situation used to be a serious problem for experts in the field. This book provides English translations of the full set of Reshetnyak's articles on the subject. Together with the companion articles, this book provides an accessible and comprehensive reference for the subject. In turn, this book should concern any researcher (confirmed or not) interested in, or active in, the field of bounded integral curvature surfaces, or more generally interested in surface geometry and geometric analysis. Due to the analytic nature of Reshetnyak's approach, it appears that his articles are very accessible for a modern audience, comparing to the works using a more synthetic approach. These articles of Reshetnyak concern more precisely the work carried by the author following the completion of his PhD thesis, under the supervision of A.D. Alexandrov. Over the period from the 1940’s to the 1960’s, the Leningrad School of Geometry, developed a theory of the metric geometry of surfaces, similar to the classical theory of Riemannian surfaces, but with lower regularity, allowing greater flexibility. Let us mention A.D. Alexandrov, Y.D. Burago and V.A. Zalgaller. The types of surfaces studied by this school are now known as surfaces of bounded curvature. Particular cases are that of surfaces with curvature bounded from above or below, the study of which gained special attention after the works of M. Gromov and G. Perelman. Nowadays, these concepts have been generalized to higher dimensions, to graphs, and so on, and the study of metrics of weak regularity remains an active and challenging field. Reshetnyak developed an alternative and analytic approach to surfaces of bounded integral curvature. The underlying idea is based on the theorem of Gauss which states that every Riemannian surface is locally conformal to Euclidean space. Reshetnyak thus studied generalized metrics which are locally conformal to the Euclidean metric with conformal factor given by the logarithm of the difference between two subharmonic functions on the plane. Reshetnyak's condition appears to provide the correct regularity required to generalize classical concepts such as measure of curvature, integral geodesic curvature for curves, and so on, and in turn, to recover surfaces of bounded curvature. Chapter-No.7, Chapter-No.8, Chapter-No.12 and Chapter-No.13 are available open access under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Fundamental Theories And Their Applications Of The Calculus Of Variations written by Dazhong Lao and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-02 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book focuses on the calculus of variations, including fundamental theories and applications. This textbook is intended for graduate and higher-level college and university students, introducing them to the basic concepts and calculation methods used in the calculus of variations. It covers the preliminaries, variational problems with fixed boundaries, sufficient conditions of extrema of functionals, problems with undetermined boundaries, variational problems of conditional extrema, variational problems in parametric forms, variational principles, direct methods for variational problems, variational principles in mechanics and their applications, and variational problems of functionals with vector, tensor and Hamiltonian operators. Many of the contributions are based on the authors’ research, addressing topics such as the extension of the connotation of the Hilbert adjoint operator, definitions of the other three kinds of adjoint operators, the extremum function theorem of the complete functional, unified Euler equations in variational methods, variational theories of functionals with vectors, modulus of vectors, arbitrary order tensors, Hamiltonian operators and Hamiltonian operator strings, reconciling the Euler equations and the natural boundary conditions, and the application range of variational methods. The book is also a valuable reference resource for teachers as well as science and technology professionals.

The Mathematics Of Soap Films Explorations With Maple written by John Oprea and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Computers categories.

Nature tries to minimize the surface area of a soap film through the action of surface tension. The process can be understood mathematically by using differential geometry, complex analysis, and the calculus of variations. This book employs ingredients from each of these subjects to tell the mathematical story of soap films. The text is fully self-contained, bringing together a mixture of types of mathematics along with a bit of the physics that underlies the subject. The development is primarily from first principles, requiring no advanced background material from either mathematics or physics. Through the Maple applications, the reader is given tools for creating the shapes that are being studied. Thus, you can "see" a fluid rising up an inclined plane, create minimal surfaces from complex variables data, and investigate the "true" shape of a balloon. Oprea also includes descriptions of experiments and photographs that let you see real soap films on wire frames. The theory of minimal surfaces is a beautiful subject, which naturally introduces the reader to fascinating, yet accessible, topics in mathematics. Oprea's presentation is rich with examples, explanations, and applications. It would make an excellent text for a senior seminar or for independent study by upper-division mathematics or science majors.
