This book grew from a series of lectures on vertebrate natural history. The topics have been developed over a period of nearly 30 years, and today scarcely resemble the original subject matter. The progress is primarily technical. Some concepts provide a synthetic framework for viewing much modern research, but many of these concepts either date from Darwin or have developed from obser vations of later students. Animal science courses follow a sequential pattern in which there are three discrete levels of undergraduate instruction. Initially, students study subject mat ter contained in such courses as biology and general zoology. These courses intro duce students to animal phylogeny, basic plans of morphology and certain phys iological aspects; incidental to these subjects the student acquires a broad zoological vocabulary. At the other end of the academic spectrum are courses that emphasize synthe sis and theory: evolution, zoogeography, behavior and ecology are important courses whose role is to explore the relationships of various aspects of the physical and biological world. In these courses theory and analysis prevail. They are not, however, essentially "subject matter" courses with distinct bodies of knowledge.

Biological Systematics has changed dramatically during the past 60 years from a handicraft or art to an accepted branch of science proper, due to the work of Willi Hennig, who was born in 1913. The scientific method of reconstructing phylogenetic relationships of organisms bases on Hennig's approach, the "Phylogenetic Systematics". The method is now so widely accepted and applied that it can firmly be regarded a paradigm, named 'cladistics'. In contrast, the life and personality of its founder is remarkably little known in the scientific community. Leading paleontologist David Archibald explores the rich history of visual metaphors for biological order from ancient times to the present and their influence on human beingsÕ perception of their place in nature. Specifically, Archibald focuses on ladders and trees, and the first appearance of trees to represent seasonal life cycles. Their use in ancient Roman decorations and genealogies was then appropriated by the early Christian Church to represent biblical genealogies. The late eighteenth century saw the idea of a tree reappropriated to visualize relationships in the natural world, sometimes with a creationist view, but in some instances suggesting evolution. Charles DarwinÕs On the Origin of Species (1859) exorcised the exclusively creationist view of the Òtree of life.Ó His ideas sparked an explosion of trees, mostly by younger acolytes in Europe. Although DarwinÕs influence waned in the early twentieth century, by midcentury his ideas held sway once again in time for another and even greater explosion of tree building, generated by the development of new theories on how to assemble trees, the birth of powerful computing, and the emergence of molecular technology.
