The third volume in the series examines the role of anti-apartheid movements around the world and their success in both creating awareness of the liberation struggle in South Africa, and in contributing to the downfall of the apartheid government. This volume, in two parts, brings together analysis written by activist scholars with deep roots in the movements and organisations they are writing about. This first part focuses on International Solidarity with the liberation struggle. It covers the contribution of various international organisations, governments and their peoples, and solidarity organisations, to the liberation struggle in South Africa. In particular, the roles of nine western European countries are discussed: West Germany; Belgium; Austria; France; The Netherlands; Portugal; Spain; Greece and Switzerland. The second part focuses on African solidarity, with an emphasis on the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and its Liberation Committee; various countries in the southern African region, including the role that Tanzania and Zambia played; as well as countries in west, east and North Africa. This is a major resource for historians, scholars and anyone interested in the history of South Africa, and will be valued by future generations for its sensitive collection of highly significant historical material.

A famous Iranian dissident calls for universal human rights and democracy based on our common humanity. Akbar Ganji, called by some “Iran's most famous dissident,” was a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. But, troubled by the regime's repressive nature, he became an investigative journalist in the 1990s, writing for Iran's pro-democracy newspapers. Most notably, he traced the murders of dissident intellectuals to Iran's secret service. In 2000, Ganji was arrested, sentenced to six years in prison, and banned from working as a journalist. His eighty-day hunger strike during his last year in prison mobilized the international human rights community. The Road to Democracy in Iran, Ganji's first book in English, demonstrates his lifelong commitment to human rights and democracy. A passionate call for universal human rights and the right to democracy from a Muslim perspective, it lays out the goals and means of Iran's democracy movement, why women's rights trump some interpretations of Islamic law, and how the West can help promote democracy in Iran (he strongly opposes U.S. intervention) and other Islamic countries. Throughout the book Ganji argues consistently for universal rights based on our common humanity (and he believes the world's religions support that idea). But his arguments never veer into abstraction; they are rooted deeply in the realities of life in Islamic countries, and offer a clear picture of the possibilities for and obstacles to improving human rights and promoting democracy in the Muslim world. Since his release from prison in March 2006, Akbar Ganji has been traveling outside Iran, meeting with intellectuals and activists in the international human rights community. He is currently living in the United States.

Excerpt from On the Road to Democracy Yielding to the benevolent solicitations of several of my friends, I now venture, to publish in this little volume certain statements which I have had the necessity of making during the discharge of my official functions, because they synthesize and set out in relief some of the most important characteristics of the present presidential policy, and, above all, because it is possible that their publication - similarly to that of my former book 'Hygiene in Mexico' - done at the expense of the Government and for the benefit of the Mexican Popular University, may contribute to promote the work of educating our people, undertaken by that worthy Institution. Volume 1 tells the history of the struggle for liberation in South Africa in the 1960s and includes chapters about "The turn to the armed struggle" and "The Morogoro Conference." Volume 2 is about the history of the liberation struggle in the crucial decade of the 1970s and includes chapters on "The Soweto Uprisings" and "The ANC Undeground." Volume 3 tells how other countries of the world (those outside the African continent) helped the oppressed majority in South Africa gain their freedom. Volume 4 concentrates on the 1980s, when the liberation movement took major strides that finally broke the backbone of white supremacist rule. Volume 5 highlights the role of supporting the liberation movement that was played by countries on the African continent, including Ghana, Algeria, and Tanzania. Volume 6 describes the crucial period from the unbanning of liberation organisations in 1990 to the triumph of South Africa's first democratic elections in April 1994. It further discusses the afterrmath of the elections: the on-going violence in areas such as Natal and the PWV region, and how South Africans of all political persuasions adjusted to the new dispensation and worked together to devise the 1996 Constitution.--Edited information from back covers.
